Talking First 1:400 Model Airport

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and have recently started creating an airport to showcase my growing number of models. I must say that many of the creations on this website are quite breathtaking and I hope to give it my best shot.

I'll start with the basics. My airport is 1m x 1m and is divided into 4 equal sections, each 50cm x 50cm. This makes it easier to store away. More sections can be added later but i'll stick with this for now. Trying to work with this space is difficult but I think I have found the optimal solution. I have decided to do each section 1 at a time. Below are some photos and a very brief outline of how it is going so far.

Pictures ares as follows:
1 The Total Base Board when slotted together

2 Foils were the first step. All were made by me on the computer using microsoft word

First 1:400 Model Airport-img_1132.jpgFirst 1:400 Model Airport-img_1131.jpg

3 Began work on the terminal. Still not quite finished

Please comment and feel free to make any suggestions or recommendations on improvements for my airport. I'll try to regularly update this thread each time I add more to it.

Thumbs up Re: First 1:400 Model Airport

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I took so long.

The airport as I said is 1 meter by 1 meter created by four different base boards. As far as gates are concerned currently there are too be six but I am looking at different layouts as well as adding more boards to make it bigger.

Here is a picture of the assembled base board:

Hope that answers your questions. Hope to do some more work in the next 2 weeks.

Thanks

I have continued to improve my airport over the past week or so. I have re-designed the layout so that I can have more space for planes as well as a road, McDonalds and a Service Station.

I didn't like the original terminal and so decided to do that again. The first section is almost finished now. I just have to add some details to the terminal, finish the service station and McDonalds and do an overall tidy up of the whole thing. I then hope to progress onto another board. I am open to suggestions so please feel free to comment.

My model collection has grown by 2. I have recently purchased a GeminiJets United 747 as well as a Air Canada 777. Hope to make more progress soon. Below are some pictures of the emerging airport.

If you have any questions I am happy to answer them.

Thanks

Fence seem a little too high for 1/400 scale, but nice layout!

Yeah, I admit that the fence is a little high. Unfortunately it looked like it was going to be a little bit fiddly to do a fence any smaller. Thanks for the comment.

My God! Are you using MS Word to design it? What a hard job! Why do you not use Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw instead?
The great advantage of Photoshop is working with layers (you can change any layer without affect others - an example on the below image is showing the grass texture without change the taxiways).

I've created mine using the free model supplied by Airport Designs - Precision Engineered Card Models web site. The site offers two options of 1:400 airport models on PDF files. I joined all pages on a single image copying from PDF to a PSD Photoshop file:

As I have no space to build the complete airport yet (it have about 130 inches lenght), I've cropped part of the image (the left higher corner) and printed it, creating a small display:

I would use Adobe Photoshop but unfortunately I don't have it at my disposal. Although a bit tricky microsoft word does the job well enough. Thanks for the comment aviationcombr.

AlabatUSA you are spot on. Although not an exact replica it is loosely based on Sydney Airport and the planes that fly. You really know your cities. Thanks for the comment. Hope to do more work on it this weekend.

Thanks for the comments

Cool Re: First 1:400 Model Airport

Hi All,
Made progress this weekend, particularly on the terminal.
Gate 1 is a double jetway for the A380, all the rest are single. The terminal is made up of balsa wood with printed windows etc. Also started the board next to it

Thanks for the comment jmoegh. It is made out of overhead projector paper i.e. It is see through. I then printed a checkered pattern on it for the fence. It comes in A4 sheets and cam be purchased from newsagents. Hope that answers your question

Hi All,
Made much progress on the runway section of the airport. Features include grass, detailed taxiway markings, an ILS Box and Holding lines on the taxiways. Am looking to create some taxiway signs although I am still making progress on those. Also added a second double A380 gate.
Some updated pics
