Thanks everyone for all the compliments and words of encouragement!
I am in the final stages of finishing the sides of the main terminal building. It has been quite time consuming as I had to figure out the height of the passenger bridge and where to cut the opening in the side of the building to mount it along with the road bridges that also go into the main building. Another thing slowing me down is all of the window frames around the windows. I have a lot of cutting to do to make all of them. I will try to get some photos up very soon to show what I have done so far. Dennis

I have a few photos of the wall of the main terminal building. I set up the passenger bridge and both vehicle bridges as well to give an idea of how it will look. What your seeing behind the wall is a couple of the other passenger bridges that were used to prop up the wall.

Its been awhile but I finally have some more progress! I just finished setting everything up tonight and wanted to post a few pics. Sorry they are a bit blurry. I will try to take some better ones this week. I finished the streets by adding the sidewalks and finished the main terminal building. I have attached a photo of the interior of the main terminal building ceiling with the stain glass inlays. Well at least color print outs of the stained glass! I will now begin working on the parking garage that will be located at the end of the main terminal building. I also have to put in the palm trees and plants along the roads and I need to put all of the light poles on the top of the buildings. I have not painted the parking lines yet at the gates.
The work continues... Dennis

SADman,
I was actually a student at the Prescott campus of ERAU as well. I was enrolled in the aeronautical science degree program and did some flying in their Cessna 172 aircraft. I was there from 1/1990 thru 8/1990. Dennis

Hello!
It has been a long time since I have posted an update on my Sky Harbor terminal. I have been working on it pretty steady. Most of the time has been spent on the terminal 3 parking garage. I have a few photos of the progress. This has been a very time consuming piece to build. There are a lot of holes to cut in each level for the columns that support the structure. Then each hole has to line up with the level below for everything to fit properly. Also each level must be placed very accurately over the level below. The border around each level requires a lot of cutting and cementing. I am pretty happy with the way it is coming along. I still need to add the top three levels and the main support columns on each side. I still need to finish up the tarmac markings as well as the trees and shrubs for the landscaping on each side of the main terminal building. I hope to have some photos soon of the new control tower. I also included a photo that shows the actual parking garage behind the Delta 757. I decided to set a Pan Am 727 at gate 18 of the north concourse where they use to fly out of in the 80's. Dennis

100% EPIC! All the details are there! Wow Dennis, you've really brought the airport game up a notch with your fine craftsmanship. I CANNOT wait to see this one done! When it IS done, get it in front of a west-facing window and get some shots with natural sunlight on it....to really bring out the tan!

I'm not sure what part of the model you are referring to. The only pinstripe I have used is to create the stripes on the elevator shafts that are located next to the parking garage. All of the road lines are done with a paint pen and a straight edge. All of the window frames on the buildings are done with a ifine tip Sharpie pen and a ruler.

Fly Frontier,
I will be building the tower that was built when terminal 3 was completed. It is a replica of the tower that was torn down last year. I have all of the pieces done I just need to assemble it now.

United Airlines DC-10,
Once I finish terminal 3 I am going to build two of the 8 concourses of terminal 4. I had to limit it to just two concourses due to the size required to build the entire complex. The total size of my layout is 4 foot by 4 foot.

sla31,
Glad my airport can be an inspiration for you! I still have a lot I want to do. When you start thinking about all of the small details that there are in an airport it starts to get overwhelming some times. Light poles, signs, landscaping, curb side check in counters, etc. I am almost done with the major structures for terminal 3. I have two more levels to add to the parking garage and then finish putting the tower together. At that point I can finish up the tarmac markings and start on all of the small details. I hope to get some new photos up soon. I have enjoyed seeing your terminal come together as well, I don't think anyone has attempted replicating any of the Phoenix terminals in 1/200 scale. What I see so far looks very good! Dennis

I have finally finished the parking garage. I have also completed a design for the floor of the terminals as well. The design replicates what the carpet looked like when the terminal was completed in 1980.
I am now working on the tarmac markings at each of the gates. The tower should be finished soon as well. I still need to add cars, people, and landscaping. Dennis

Sorry I tried to attach all of the photos at once instead of one at a time.
Here are the rest of the pics. I also attached a photo of the carpet in terminal 3 when it was built to show what I am trying to replicate. Dennis

Jmoegh,
Thanks for the compliments! The windows are made of plastic. Actually the whole side of the building is cut from a plastic sheet and then all of the details are added to the plastic. The window frames are drawn in with a fine tip Sharpie pen using a straight edge. I have attached some photos of one of the walls of a gate concourse as I was building it. The notches are where the jet ways will be located. I also have a photo of the label from the package that the plastic comes in. Dennis

jonatan 47,
Well this is just the beginning of the what I plan to do for inside detail as this is just the floor. I plan on putting some ticket counters and chairs in the waiting areas by the gates. I also plan on building some detail into the main terminal building like the escalators. They will be static only however. I will try to build the ticket counters in that building as well along with the second level which houses the gift shops. But that wont be done until all of the outside detail is complete. Things like the tarmac markings and staining and landscaping along the roads. Dennis

Run or Die,
I did not obtain any blueprints for the model. I used Google Earth and the measuring tool they have to get the size of the buildings and taxiways. Then I converted these measurements into 400 scale. 1 inch in 400 scale equals 33 feet. The photos from Google also helped with figuring out the details of the buildings and pavement markings. What airport are you planning to build? Dennis
