So I decided to get back on this project now that summer is here. Almost done with all construction so I decided to post some pictures! Next will be spay paint, windows, etc. Comments and suggestions appreciated! Also, if anyone has good ground marking photos or plans I would appreciate it since I'm not familiar at all with the parking layout.
Enjoy! ![]() ps- excuse the blotchiness from my dirty hands Last edited by oliJFK; 06-15-2009 at 08:38 PM. |

Your terminal is looking very nice! I really like the complex curves on the roof, that looks like it would be hard to do and to replicate consistently. I am looking forward to seeing this one completed with all of the different TWA aircraft at the gates! I have always like the TWA paint schemes from the twin globes to the final colors.
Keep up the great work!

So I finally got a board for the model and painted everything white so I decided to go ahead and post a 360 view of the terminal.
I'm still modifying the window decals but those should be done soon! Last edited by oliJFK; 07-02-2009 at 02:47 PM. |

Yes, its a nice cardboard that gives you nice curves and it can be sanded, painted, etc. Its normally used for mounting art but works great for architectural models. I would advise against foam core although it does have its uses.

Hmmm, I don't know Brian.....the baggage claim ceiling height was 14'. Yours look to only be 13.98 feet high. Better start over and send this sub-par example to me.

This is some great work on a very complex architecture. But have you noticed, that the building looks something like some kind of cartoon character with its arms over its head, one hand splayed out and the other with two fingers like a peace sign. Sorry, it's my weird imagination at work.

OliJFK,
Wow...Saarinen would be proud~ Need pics?...Just Google it. There is hundreds to choose from! PS: Is there any way you could make the windows out of plexi instead of solid? The windows are important to the design. Either way, looks great. Herb

I just need photos of the lines on the tarmac, etc... I also didn't opt for plexi because not only did I think it would look unrealistic, but it would have also been nearly impossible to support the complex roof without a visible mess on the inside. Quote:

Excellant! Looking superb! What technique do you use for your roadway lines? Looking for something easier than what I've been doing.

Thanks Dylan!
The roadway lines are made with Chartpak's Graphic Tape. After placing them I seal them with a fluid matte medium so they don't lift. Hope this helps! |

Looks amazing. Such precision-
I dig that. How are you generating parts and maskings for roadways, etc?

Brian, You've heard it from everybody else....now me: THANK YOU for your model airports. They have raised the bar and given us all great ideas to shoot for. Just when the forums couldn't get any more droll and boring, you've reinvigerated us and got us all excited to work again.
![]() ![]() One more stupid question.....this liquid matte medium, what the hell is that and who makes it??!! I aint too learned on all this s'phisticated stufffff.

Thanks guys for all the feedback! I haven't posted any progress because I've taken a few steps back by removing all the roadside I posted earlier (which was based on the post 2001 IAB completion) and recreating the roadside as it was through the 80s and 90s - now featuring a lot of grassy areas. Yesterday I also bought all the jetways for the terminal which should be up soon a long with other details such as metal etchings, etc....

Wow, it must have been hard to remove all of the roadway and striping! They looked really nice! The roadways and striping on your terminal were the best I have seen. I know you have heard it many times before but the work you did on the terminal building is first class! I dont think it can be done any better! Especially the complex curves of the roof! I have been looking at all of your pictures of the progress and am eagerly awaiting the next photos!

Okay!:
Not much forward progress but a lot of changes. I repainted the whole terminal, applied new windows, redid the roadside, repainted the board and installed the jetways.. Now it should be more in line with 80s-90s which are the main decades I want to replicate with this diorama. Next will come all the small details and tarmac markings. I might also make some more changes to the roadside as I find new and better images. Enjoy! ![]() ps - Thank you for all the positive feedback! |

Your work is just stunning. Don't know what else to say. I have to ask though, where do you get your references from? I researched this terminal for months and found very little information outside of the main terminal building.
Again outstanding work ..............

As you said, there is very little information so I had to compile dozens of images from flickr, airliners.net, the NYU and New York Public Library, etc. a long with aerial imagery in order to make the flight wings and tarmac as precise as possible. The flight center itself was made using blueprints by Saarinen found in books. However, I must say the most difficult part to figure out was definitely the ground markings. I deciphered those by looking at photos and google satellite images that revealed the faded lines I wanted to replicate. Anyway, here are some updated photos of the diorama with ground markings and some dirt and grime as well as a teaser TWA 747. Enjoy!

WOW thats pretty nuts there, amazing work
I've got a question though...for the airport yellow taxi lines and marking are you using Pactra Trim Tape? and what thickness? I'm doing an airport in 1:500 and can't decide if 1/16" looks too big or if 1/32" is the way to go, thanks. |
