Default KHTI- Hockey Table International

I have known for some time that I wanted a 1/400 scale airport to display my models. While I really wanted to build it myself, I was beginning to lean towards buying the Gemini set and just being done with it. However, one day I happened to standing next to a fooseball table and that is the inspiration I needed. While I knew a fooseball table was too deep and would need quite a bit of destruction before construction could begin, I thought to myself that either a small pool table or an air hockey table would be the best platform on which to construct the airport. So, I began searching on Craigslist for either table. While I found plenty, they were either too far or too expensive for what I had in mind. Not giving up, I stopped by a local flea market and believe it or not, I found an air hockey table for $10! Thus was born - KHTI - Hockey Table International.

With my table in hand, it was then that I wasn't sure what to do next. Do I fill in each individual air hole or buy a board to place over the top of the surface. I had some leftover spackling, so I tried that.
The result:

The results were not what I hoped. I put that aside and again contemplated buying boards to go over the top. A friend has since suggested trying wood putty. I have bought some, but have yet to try it. Stay tuned for that.

While still not sure what to do with the base, I focused my attention on the overall design of KHTI. I drew up plans based on the area that is usable and have arrived at the following:
The diorama will consist of one runway, one taxiway, one terminal with 6 jetways, a commuter area at the end of the terminal with parking for two commuter planes and three pad parking spots.
Now, on with terminal construction:

The terminal takes shape:

This is the commuter end. Access to the commuter aircraft will be via the ramp.

Testing the fit of the Gemini jetways. The aircraft are GJ Hawaiian B-717 and GJ Hawaiian A330-200. They are resting on test foils. I will be painting the tarmac and runways - no foils will be harmed in the making of KHTI. All lines will be hand painted. At this point, I am thinking of painting the terminal a deep brick red with a green roof.

This is really interesting.
I use Evergreen plastics too for my buildings. Its such a good medium to use.
The Hockey table is an interesting idea for a base.
Keep the pics rolling in......

Great job with the terminal so far. As for me, I would have used those tiny holes to insert optic fiber

I am building a 1/200 airport out of 2x6s, sharpies, card board and spray paint, the only trouble is the jet-ways. I gotta say that this is looking like a really good model airport.

I would have left the air holes in place. put some planes on the ramp, and plug it in. some wind shear for you.

but seriously, how long did it take to spackle all the holes? that must have taken a bit of time.

also, I hope you keep posting pictures of your progress. especially with the way you stage your pictures, we can see what materials you are using and how, which is good for those looking for tips.

I only did a third of the table before I stopped and that took about 30 minutes. I stopped to see how the spackle dried. When I would scrape off the dried spackle, it was leaving little dimples which would mean a second application. I figured since the first coat left dimples, the second would as well. As I said, I am going to try wood putty this weekend. I'll post the results.

Also, I will post more progress pictures as I go through the build.

Wow! Love the design! That is also a very pink terminal! Is the color translating from real life to the photos?

It is the photos. The color I am using is Krylon Burgundy. But you are right, it sure does come off with a pink hue!

Very creative of you using a hockey table! I might use this idea if I make an airport in the future. Im looking forward to more photos, this is very interesting!

Latest update: I have all but one of the windows to the terminal installed. I had a minor mishap with one window and am having to re-do it. I had planned on working on the table portion this weekend, but it looks like I will be working all weekend at my paying job instead. Also, I am redesigning the terminal roof. My original plan was for a bat-wing/cat eye type roof (imagine you are looking at the rear of a 1959 Chevy). Now, I am looking at a gentle arc type roof. A trip to the hobby store is called for but the nearest one that carries what I need is 45 minutes away. So, it looks like next weekend before I have more photos. Sorry folks, but duty calls!

Latest work of KHTI. Since spackle didn't want to work, I found a product called Plastic Wood. I filled in the holes with it and am now in the process of sanding it down. However, it is not a very sandable product, but I will keep trying.

I did manage to work some on the terminal: here are the windows installed after tinting:

Now, its off to work on the roof. I have changed the design from a gull wing design to a soft arc. On paper and in my mind, it seemed a lot easier. In practice, it didn't go so well but I am please with the results. Here are the roof trusses after construction:

Here they are test fitted to the terminal:

Test fitting the roof to the terminal. I will be painting it a dark green.

Test fitting the jetways. I don't know quite how it happened, but they are a little lower now than before.

Great terminal, it's looking amazing.
May I just ask how you pull down the wheel part on the jet bridge. Mine seem too stiff to just pull it. I just dont want to break them. Thanks

Thanks for the compliment. As for the jetway wheels, you just have to pull down firmly, but gently (a contradiction, I know). Mine were actually too loose. I had to wrap a little clear tape around the pistons so they would not move whilst in the shafts.

64jamesg, thanks for asking.

Progress has pretty much come to a standstill due to work. I did manage to finish the terminal only to have a cat step on the roof. After extensive repair, sanding and a repaint, it is presentable. I will try to post some photos of the terminal when I get a chance. As for the tarmac, it has been tougher than I thought to get it to look right. I have tried two different ways to fill in the air holes but neither method worked 100%. When I get time, I am going to try filling and sanding again. Stay tuned.
