Re: Airliners International Memphis...
I'll be going. I work everyday that it is here, though. However, I do work at Memphis Center so I'm sure I'll at least see one of the tour groups.

Hoping to. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to get in on the FedEx hub tour. I'm on the waiting list, though.

Re: Airliners International Memphis...
That wait list is long. But we have FedEx maintenance and ops tours, Tours to ART(Mesa's maintenance base) in Blytheville, tours to the FAA tower (two just added), tours to Memphis Center, and a photo tour of Memphis airport.

Considering I have most of the booty bag stuff for Memphis taking up space in my office, i can say it will be a mix of luggage tags, postcards, magazines, playing cards, safety cards, and various other items.

The event is sponsored by the World Airline Historical Society, and while we like peope to be WAHS members, it's not a requirement.

Hi all,
I am going to be there from 7/25 through 7/29/2012. Any feedback on this as it is touted as the world's largest show? I know it travels around the country. DP

Re: Airliners International Memphis...
Just make sure you stay in East Memphis and it's surrounding areas (Cordova, Collierville, Germantown). This is a rough city for tourists who are unfamiliar.

Re: Airliners International Memphis...
The area the Hilton is in is East Memphis. It's a safe area, and has decent shops and restaurants. The best areas in Memphis are Poplar Ave (what the hotel is off of in a swath east from Oak Court mall (there are some PRICEY shops there) toward Collierville and the stretch of I-40 in the northeast part of town near Germantown road (adjacent to Wolfchase Galleria, another pricey mall). Staying near the airport is NOT recommended; this area is rough at night. However, for spotters there is a gallery on the 2nd floor of the terminal overlooking the field, it's before security and air-conditioned.

Hi all,
While I was the professor at UT Memphis 10 years ago, I frequented Beale street and if you want to experience the southern BBQ and Blues at its finest, that's the place to be. If you see an asian guy playing model airplane at the bar, come say Hi and I will buy you a beer! DP

Re: Airliners International Memphis...
Hi,
For those who are familiar with this type of show, is it the grand daddy of all? Is this the place where attendees get sensory overloads and go for days without food, water and totally ignore their loved ones? Is this the place where one can blow the entire life saving? Is this the place where anger flares between buyers that result in looting, car burning, window smashing, shooting outside the hotel? Please advise me so I can be prepared. Thanks all. DP

Hi again,
We all need to becareful when wandering downtown Memphis at night. As I recall reading a few years back, Memphis was the worse crime city in America. I hope it is no longer the case. DP

No, it is still very much the case. It's not as bad as many people say it is but you need to make yourself aware of the parts of the city. Be extremely careful where you go. East Memphis (along Poplar) and north of Winchester Road are okay along with Germantown, Cordova, & Collierville. If you're on Winchester, stay east of South Germantown Road. Winchester is a very weird street where it turns from nice, new shopping complexes and restaurants to world's largest pawn shops, cash advances, and used car dealerships very, very quickly. Beale Street downtown can be a little rough but there is generally a good police presence there. Also, Mud Island (which is really a peninsula) is just north of downtown near the Pyramid and is a very nice area and has a nice little shopping area with some restaurants.
The Memphis Zoo is nice zoo. If you're staying at the hotel, you would just want to go west on Poplar which is the same street as the hotel. However, the zoo is pretty far west so when you exit, just make sure you exit back onto Poplar and not north. North will take you to a collection of adult theaters with some really sketchy people standing outside.
Whatever you do, don't go wandering around at night in any of the other areas. Especially near the airport and north of it as that will take you into Orange Mound.
Oh and a lot of people may want to go and cross the Mississippi. That is all fine and dandy. Just be aware, that when you go to turn around, you'll be in West Memphis, AR which is also not a place you want to be.

I used to live in Mud Island and since I left in 2003, the city took a nose dive. I used to pack my car at the end of the runway watching Fed Ex planes land and take off. I just love seeing those 310's taxing on the ramps. I wonder if it is still safe to do so at night? DP

Re: Airliners International Memphis...
Hi
Anyone stays at the Hilton and wants to share a room? I would rather take my savings and put that toward my model purchase. If nobody wants to share a room, then I am going to stay a cheap motel that rents by the hour but only costs me 29.99 a day! That way I can save the money to buy those Flight Minature models! DP

You're on. In an amazing event that required the correct stellar allignment, parting of the Red Sea, hell freezing over, and the purchase of expensive baubles for my wife; both my spouse and job have permitted me to take a Friday off, so I'll be driving up from New Orleans early Friday morning, and will have Friday afternoon/Saturday to enjoy myself.

Safe travels to all. My departure is Friday morning, and involves I-12W, I-55N, & I-240.
Oh, and one stupid question. Is there any way of identifying each other easily? Short of me hauling around a cannon?
