What's worse, the Army's salivating for the A-10s should the Air Farce ever give up on them, but the Key West agreement of 1948 prevents the Army from getting them.
The Key West agreement gave certain spheres of influence on aircraft missions to the respective services: - The Army can fly armed helicopters, but cannot fly fixed wing combat aircraft. (And the Air Force pitched a royal b*tch when the Army came up with it!)
- The Navy (and Marines) cannot fly heavy bombers, but they can fly tactical combat aircraft and some tactical airlift in support of the fleet or Marine expeditionaty forces.
- The Air Force has the monopoly on heavy bombers, land-based ICBMs, strategic airlift, most tactical airlift, aerial refueling (except for the Navy when supporting their carriers) and most utility helicopters.
