Yeah, thats why US Airways, United, American Airlines (who I hear isn't too thrilled of their A300s due to the blame game of AA587, and only keep onto them because of the massive belly space they have so they can use them for those really huge S. America routes), Northwest, UPS, FedEx, and JetBlue are registered in Europe and not the US.
Here are some other European Birds that US airlines have operated:
Sud Aviation Caravelle: United
Vickers Viscount: United, Capital Airlines (merged with UAL), Continental.
BAC 1-11: American Airlines, Mohawk, Braniff
F-27: Various airlines flew this, including Ozark, Northeast, Delta (short time after Northeast merger) some were the FFH-227 (licnesed built version).
Fokker F.X Trimotor: PanAm, TWA
There are just a few examples of "European" birds that flew in the US.
