Default Re: Mall shooting in Omaha, NE

I've known many, many people who've had rough times throughout their lives...people abused by relatives; abandoned by uncaring, unsympathetic parents; troubled by psychological or physical problems. Not one of them ever shot anyone, or let that abuse destroy their lives. You CAN rise above your situation...no matter how bleak. Quite a few choose to let it swallow them, and it IS a choice. A very good psychologist friend of mine told me once, "Do you know why people do the things they do? It's because they can." They choose to have no restraint...and I'm talking about the ones whom others treat as normal, not true full-blown psychotics. The guy who has his friends say, "Well he seemed ok to me", they didn't notice his behavior changes because they were subtle, which indicates a depression that is being hidden. Very, very few can hide truly abnormal behavior. The ones with the hidden depression, they make a conscious choice to create mayhem when they act. Human behavior is far more complex than can be explained here, I'm just offering simplification and opinions based on a minor in psychology I almost finished, and from a few friends over the years with whom I've talked that are very knowledgeable in the field. This guy tripped over the edge because he was angry and depressed, and CHOSE to lash out, figuring it didn't matter anymore (to him). If he had found a sympathetic ear to talk to about what was going on in his head, he may have made a different choice, one in which he decided to stop feeling sorry for himself and hating the world. It's never easy to spot a person in trouble, but if you truly care, it can be done. The loners have it difficult, but they can still fight the darkness, IF THEY CHOOSE TO. I'd bet there are quite a few of you who've had dark thoughts at one time or another...did you act on them? I know I've had some seriously bad periods in my life, and even a couple of suicidal thoughts that have crept in...but I NEVER considered taking anyone else's life. And the bad times passed, as they will.
