Actually, a lot of research is going on for hypersonic, sub-orbital airliners, and for dirigibles, believe it or not. A dirigible can carry over a thousand people, and be over three hundred metres long. These would be used as cruise liners for those interested in that sort of thing...New York to London or Paris in 36 hours, luxury suites and great food, entertainment. It's an idea that's been kicking around for awhile.
