You guys ever actually restore the data after a major crash? I can recall a few horror stories about IT shops that religiously backed up their data but never bothered to verify if those backups could be used to restore. In one case, several days of production was lost costing several hundred thousand dollars and in another, none of the data was recoverable after a crash which cost them millions.
I've used these stories several times in persuading management that, yes, the database and web server farms can be taken off-line while these restore scenarios are tested.
