Actually, this one does not really have shades. That small white switch you see on the crown operates the cabin door. As the door opens, the yellow strip of metal, on which passengers' faces are printed, moves and the heads disappear.

The similar-size DC-8 has the same feature.

On the big model DC-7s this mechanism is automatic and battery-operated.
