Thank you for the feedback InterFlug62M,
I am now reasonably certain that it is made from wood.
The only place where it is visible is where the stand enters the belly,
there a fine grained wood is visible. Also if you knock on it it sounds
like wood. It is not very heavy though.

My dad was an expatriate 747 pilot for SIA and the model was bought by a friend who flew Airbuses for SIA (not a 747 flight to Manila from SIN). The fact that it was was bought by a pilot (cost US$100 around 1989) should indicate that it is not a "dog" (-: . My Dad recently scaled down, a friend wanted to buy it, but never did and now it is still with me. I don't have space for it, but it really is beautifully made.
