Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert hydrogen or hydrogen rich fuels into electricity and heat without combustion. Their structure is similar to a battery, however the are lighter and never need charging or replacing. They can consistently produce electricity as long as they are supplied with hydrogen and oxygen.
Fuel cells are small and modular, therefore fuel cell power plants can provide electricity for a wide variety of applications.. They are used to power vehicles driven by electric motors, operating at 40% - 80% efficiency, far greater than spark ignition engines. Fuel cell stationary power plants are smaller, quiet and have fewer pollutants and emissions than fossil fuel power plants and therefore better suited for urban environment.
