AW will be using A319s, and the flights will only be twice daily. I don't know if it will make much of a dent in the transcon business of American, United and Delta. In the JFK-LAX market, AA has 9 daily 767-200s, UA 7 daily 767-200s, and DL 4 or 5 daily 767-300ERs, depending on the season.
JFK-LAX is the single most profitable route in AA's network, so it will be interesting to see how they defend their market share.
One thing that has adversely affected the JFK-LAX route is the fact that the Hollywood crowd who have supported the routes since the 1950s have been abandoning commercial flights because the additional security is a hassle for them, so they are flying more and more on private jets. They can go to a smaller airport, get to their Gulfstream IV in minutes and be on their way. They don't even have to deal with traffic and waiting to take off. Even if they're not quite wealthy enough to own and maintain their own plane, they can timeshare, and it's more "affordable."
