I had heard sometime last year on the radio that the U.S. government initially claimed that the reason for the crash was the result of suicide on behalf of the co-pilot of the Egypt Air flight.

However, the Egyptian government threatened to remove American air bases in Egypt if the U.S. government proceeded to blame the Egypt Air pilot.

Egypt - now there is another fine democratic state located in the Middle East : )
