Exclamation Update to "Why the stupid shouldn't fly" part 1

Man enters guilty plea in security breach
Each of two counts could carry up to a year in jail

JONESBORO, Georgia (AP) -- A man who dashed past security guards at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport -- triggering a four-hour shutdown -- pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of misdemeanor criminal trespassing.

Michael Shane Lasseter, 33, of Gainesville, was not immediately sentenced. Each count carries a maximum of a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Thousands of passengers had to be rescreened and some flights were canceled on November 16 after Lasseter ran past guards and down an "up" escalator.

Lasseter told police he had left the airport's secure area to retrieve a camera bag and then was rushing to get back to his son, whom he'd left waiting with an uncle at an airline gate.

Also Wednesday, AirTran Airways said it had settled a $100,000 civil suit that it filed against Lasseter to recover losses from the airport disruption. AirTran and Lasseter's attorney did not disclose the terms of the settlement, but airline spokesman Tad Hutcheson called it a "very modest" payment.

The Federal Aviation Administration fined Lasseter $3,300, but he had the right to appeal.
