LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Two terminals of Los Angeles International Airport were evacuated for about four hours Monday after a man tried to carry a dummy grenade through a security checkpoint, authorities said.
The man was taken into custody, but the United States attorney later said "no case" would be made against him by federal authorities.
Security screeners saw the grenade when the man put his carry-on bag through a baggage screening machine, law enforcement officials said.
The two terminals were evacuated and hundreds of people could be seen waiting outside. Three flights were canceled and many more were delayed, officials said.
The dummy grenade was an exact, military replica of a working grenade, police and the FBI said. An FBI spokesman said the grenade had been "rendered inert."
"This is not a toy. It's an exact replica of a military device and ... it is capable of being converted to an explosive device," Los Angeles Police Cmdr. Gary Brennan said.
Authorities took the package containing the device to a remote area outside the airport terminal and used a robot to destroy it.
