Default I've never understood the "bling bling..."

I remember all the "gold" 1:400 models but I wasn't aware of any of those ugly models being made in 1:500. While I've been catching up I've seen several of them now - classic airliners, modern ones, etc. One question: WHY?

I'm sorry if there are collectors on the market who love that stuff...but it ain't me. I'm looking to replicate reality on a small scale and the ideal of a gold-plated 757 is as terrible as doing it to the real thing.

Any idea on how popular they are? Even when I devoted a huge amount of money to collecting, I'd reserve it for models of actual planes, not disco-inspired replicas.

Meanwhile...the other advances in 1:500 are awesome! Open doors, odd moulds (classics and one-offs) and the sheer diversity are great to see.

Regardless of what scale they have, I think they're hideous.

How many "hardcore" collectors are there collecting these goldy models anyway ?

They have been happening some time now, I think even while you were regularly visiting DA.C some time ago. Netmodels is usually the worst offender of this, from what I hear, they are usually made in extremely low quantities, around the same number that we see herpa samples produced in (usually 20) and like most samples are pretty hard to find(except for that FAT Camary 757, which always seems to be on Ebay).

On a more lighter note, you should see some of thoe VIP transports of the Middle East, the whole interior seems to be gold/platnum plated in some of those birds.

you know, i am wondering myself. but perhaps it isn't collectors (like us) who buy these...i read somewhere a long time ago that some rich asian/ chinese businessmen or "collectors" buy these for luck. (same reason japanese buy the manekineko (waving cat) or when the chinese display a jade toad with the gold coin on the mouth in their offices). just my 2 cents' worth.

I never considered that Hikouki...

I forget sometimes that non-collectors buy these models...and not everyone is as sophisticated as us!

well, i wouldn't lump these superstitious people together with the rest of the "non-collectors." most passengers i know prefer to buy models of the actual planes that they have been on.

So maybe they are ordered by a superstitious rich man, but isnt this only possible that this person a limited edition, say 100 or 200 pieces.
AFAIK as I remember, the manufacturers doesnt allow a person even if he is very rich, to only have a rather small quantity less then 100. Isnt that expensive for the manufacturer ?

How do one explain the goldy models wandering around on Ebay ?

I have pondered on buying the gold philippines model once or twice but since they all seem to come from blue box, pondering is as far as i get, even if i wanted to pay a stupid $100 they all seem to come from virginfans who has banned me from buying from him anyway, so let him keep his cheap bling.

Not my taste. I ain't gonna buy it, although if it appeared on some movie or something, a goldy 747 model like this looks like it was taken from The spy who shagged me, comedy movie.

I'm not a fan of golden models, I never had one and I think I will never buy one. I'm just curious to know if a real golden plane ever existed... Do you know something more about it??? I saw a picture of a golden Dessault Falcon but it's the only one I saw in scale 1:1.
