Even sweeter, much of the OEM work is being done by Boeing.
Lose the contract, but keep the production lines cranking! What a great country! |

It sure appears to be able to kick serious butt. It would have been nice to have seen the YF-23 enter service tho. Best regards to the USAF -

I am not sure but I believe the designation is YF22 or the F-22 when in production? Obviously an awesome aircraft not only designed for air superiority, but also harder to see on radar due to its profile and the materials used.
Now they (they being whoever is dumb enough to take us on :-)) not only have to worry about suddenly being blown from the sky by a 100 mile plus distant missle, but an unexpected blast from behind of the minigun cannons? Gotta love it!! ![]() Quote:

The YF-22 was the preproduction demonstrator for the ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) competition and although the layout was very similar, it has numerous differences in detail from the actual production F-22A Raptor, which is what's pictured above. I've attached a pic of the YF-22 below.
At one point the YF-22 had the name "Lightning II" and the YF-23 built by McDD/Northrop had the unofficial nickname "Black Widow II" and even sported a red hourglass marking on the underbelly which was promptly removed at the insistence of the management. The differences came about from the results of the competition and flight testing of the YF-22. You'll probably see the same sort of transformation from the current Lockheed X-35 JSF to the production model which has been referred to in the tech press as the F-35. No word yet on a name for that bird, but I'm going to guess the USAF will want to give a bird of prey name, provided the USN and the USMC (and possibly the RAF/RN) go along with it. Just look at the trouble Eurofighter had getting everyone to agree with the Typhoon name for that plane!

Operational deployment of the F-22 hasn't been set in stone yet, but this is what's proposed: Nellis AFB, Las Vegas- proposed home of the F-22 Force Development Evaluation Program and Weapons School- this is obvious since the USAF's 57th Wing Air Warfare Center is based here. In 2002 the first Raptors will delivered the 325th Fighter Wing at Tyndall AFB in Florida. This unit is with the AETC (Air Education and Training Command) and will be responsible for advanced pilot training. Two squadrons will be established under the 325th FW, which right now trains F-15C/D pilots. By 2004 its expected to have an initial cadre of Raptor pilots ready for an operational squadron to form. The 1st Fighter Wing at Langley AFB in Virginia is slated to be the first operational F-22 wing. There are three F-15 squadrons at Langley with the 1st FW and each will transition to the F-22A beginning in 2004 and completing the process in 2007. Each squadron at Langley is to have 24 primary aircraft plus 2 backups. Additonal units that are planned to receive the F-22A to replace the F-15C/D include the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin AFB, Florida, the 366th Wing at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, and the 3rd Wing at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. A new F-22 wing will be created at Tyndall AFB to be co-located with the training squadrons already set up there.

It's only appropriate that the 1st FW at Langley be the first to put the F-22A Raptor into service. They're one of the most historic and distinguished wings in the USAF, with a lineage going back to WWI as the 1st Pursuit Group.
One of the 1st FW's squadrons, the 94th Fighter Squadron, with the "Hat in the Ring" emblem, goes back to 1917 when it was formed as the 94th Aero Squadron and as a unit, they scored more kills in WWI than any other squadron- 70 victories. Not so surprising when you realize they had famous aces such as Raoul Lufberry and Eddie Rickenbacker in their ranks.
