Cool Your First L-1011 ride...

I clearly remember seeing L-1011s alot growing up across the river from PHL in south Jersey. My mom traveled alot on business, so we were always picking her up, and dropping her off. I used to see on a regular basis, the L-1011s of Delta, TWA, Eastern, and rarely ATA and BA. I didn't fly on the Tristar until 1995 when i flew from MCO to BOS on a big, beautiful Delta L-1011-200 on a clear august morning for a truly memorable flight, and was dissapointed when the return flight was an MD-88.

A TWA L-1011 from LAS to PHX in February 1990.
It was only $35 round trip!

Smile First L1011

First one was 1978, SFO to New York on TW. It was my first widebody and I was amazed how big the plane was. I remember getting the flight attendant to take me up to the cockpit during the flight. That was a great flight deck. Of course today you can't get with ten feet of the flight deck, especially during the flight.

My only other L1011 experience was in 1984 when I flew DL FLL-EWR during the Christmas holidays and probably the worst flight of my life. It was a packed cattle car full of nasty and whiny old people going back home for the holidays.

Great plane, though I prefer the DC 10 in the great debate over these two planes.

My first and probably last flight on the good ol' Tristar was Delta flight 1565 ATL-LAX in August 1999 on N728DA (Yes, the same one that operated the last DL L-1011 flight!! )

Cool

I flew a DL L1011-250 MCO-ATL in early '98. I was an airline employee at the time, and I was so concerned that I wouldn't ever get a ride on a Tristar that I decided to buy an ID-90 on DL and fly just to log the aircraft type. On a Saturday I flew IAH-MCO-ATL-IAH. Not only did I get on the Tristar, but I got seat 1A!

Delta L-1011-1 N786DA 1996 ATL-CVG. Ex-Eastern! Ex-N332EA Technically the only "Eastern" plane I've flown on. Still had EA blue interior (I'm guessing----but the 2 shades of blue reminded me instantly of EA's blues, and I didn't find out until I looked it up that it WAS an Ex-EA plane). Man, that plane was old---lights didn't work, galley out of order, seat recline button GONE---but I loved it all the more---it was a TriStar--my first and most likely last---I flew MCO-ATL-CVG-CID----the ATL stop was PURELY so I could get on a TriStar--gate agent thought I was nuts--took me 10 mins to find out why he was typing and typing and getting frustrated when I checked in---he spent all that time trying to re-book me at the last minute straight to CVG!!!! :P Man was I ticked---I wasn't going to miss the only chance in my life to get on a TriStar because HE thought I should take a different route.

*** I wished he would have ASKED if I wanted a different flight, then I had to convince him that, yes, I wanted the flights I had booked and paid for and already had seating assignments for, yes, I knew ATL was unneccesary and it cost more (it was only like 50 bucks), and that yes, I wanted to spend 5 hours at ATL waiting for my next flight staring at planes. Sheesh--ticket counter workers. *** If he'd just checked me in as my tickets said, I would have been done in 5 secs--one bag carry-on, one bag checked---simple.

On my CID-CVG-ATL-stay overnight at ATL to look at planes-MCO flights, no one said a word--they just checked me in. It was simple, and I saw several hundred planes that day--if you're ever at ATL, get a room facing the airport at the Renaissance Hotel there---you can look DOWN at planes. (I had a 9th floor room)

The only L-1011 I've been on was a British West Indies Airways (BWIA) from JFK-POS (Port of Spain, Trinidad)-JFK in the early 1980's......Usually took the BWIA DC9 to MIA...

My first -1011 ride was a long journey in the summer of 1982.
SAN-PHX-ATL-MIA-SJU. I had a bulkhead seat for a bit of extra room.

January 1978, coming back to Chicago after the Orange Bowl. And was I ever in a foul mood since OU got upset by Arkansas (and I'm in an even fouler mood after last Saturday).

It was a Delta machine, sans center bins, and I remember several of the bins dropping open due to the rough takeoff. They served steak and champagne in coach, and that made for a pleasant trip back to ORD.

I also remember flying LHR-CDG on a BA 1011 in '86, and even on that short of a flight, they managed to serve drinks and a nice HOT breakfast.

Cool

First one: Delta ATL-CVG in March '96.

Since then, something like 4 times LGW-CVG (and back) before they introduced the MD-11 on the route (at least on a more frequent basis).

And Last but not least: Delta SFO-ATL June '00 (1hr late because of a leaky (hydraulic) shock absorber).

My first was in 1991 on Delta from Atlanta to Manchester, England and then back again about 3 weeks later. Took connecting flights back to PDX from ATL through SLC.

Enjoy,

Neil.

My only flight in an L1011 was in March of 1978 with LTU from Düsseldorf via Bangor, Maine to JFK. The return trip was also **supposed to** be with an LTU L-1011, but that flight was hopelessly overbooked, and after an eternal wait we finally were put on a very old DC-8 back to Düsseldorf, and I forget whose DC-8 that was.

- Bill

BTW, that flight was NOT flight 1542

BA L1011 service from Heathrow to Lisbon, Portugal. An odd flight too...

Even though my cousin was one of the design engineers and got me all sorts of stuff relating to the 1011 when I was a kid, (which of course made me a BIG fan of the plane) I never got to FLY on one until a vacation to Europe with my parents & brothers MANY years later. I saw the big 1011-200 Redtail sitting at the gate and was SO excited to FINALLY be riding on one! Then the fantasy un-raveled...

The BA attendant told us to grab a lunch as we boarded... a sack off of the back of a truck at the bottom of a set of airstairs. Talk about disappointing service! but the sight of walking up to the door from the ground was amazing! We got inside and it was CATTLE CAR class! I swear I remember it being 3/5/3 seating! on an L1011! I've NEVER been more cramped on a flight then or since... and I was a SKINNY young man! My brothers and I fought over the armrests as we ate our soggy sandwiches and watered pudding. I noticed that the windows seemed smaller and lower than Boeing or DC aircraft and it was HOT!!! until we pushedback and they got the engines running... It was a bumpy but otherwise uneventful ride... but NOT what I had spent years looking forward to...

This is in GREAT contrast to my LAST L1011 ride, 2 years ago, MCO to LAX, with the family on a DAL 1011-500. What a WONDERFUL flight! Smooth, quiet, 2/5/2 seating with almost no-one on the plane as it was an evening flight... the same as my honeymoon! What a joy! The windows still seemed small, but the sight of those wings as they opened up on takeoff and landing was great! I'll miss the old birds afterall...

Default it was Delta

I flew a Delta L-1011 from ORD to ATL for a job interview for Delta Airlines. If I remember the flight back the same evening was also a L-1011. That was September of 1985.

I got the job

First (and probably last) 1011 flight:

Chennai, India to Colombo, Sri Lanka, on an old Air Lanka bird in '98. Short flight, but on a beautiful clear skied day with a window seat right near the back of the plane. Looked down at just the right moment and caught an Air Lanka A320 below us screaming past in the other direction. Very cool flight.

On the ground in Chennai before we left, I managed, despite all the stern security warnings everywhere, to sneak a picture of her. Turned out a bit fuzzy through the glass but it is one of the treasured photos in my collection. I'd fly the Tristar again anyday.

Default I have never flown on an L-1011!

I wish I could have. Saw Hawaiian's, TWA's, Delta's and American International.
I really liked Hawaiian's. At least Gemini gave us a good one there!

First L-1011 flight on LTU in 1977, approx. 25 L-1011 flights in total. Last one 1988 - as far as I recall. Very sad, had to use these ugly and boring B737s,MD-80s, and A319s/A320s in the follwing years. However, I enjoyed the A310 and B767 flights I had in the 1990's plus the one and only ride on a B747 Classic (-200C) to LAX.
