Default Good gemini jets or 1/400 retailers in singapore?

Hi, I would like to know if there are any shops in Singapore who specializes in selling 1/400 civillian airliner models or Gemini Jets at reasonable prices. The other shops I went to sell their products for high profits and thus the prices are VERY unreasonable. So anyone knows where to find them at good prices? I do not wish to go to Malaysia

When I was in Singapore I found it very expensive, the likes of Nikko driving the price of Phoenix models through the roof. $180SGD for a SQ A380. RIP OFF!

I am not sure about Nikko. I remember last year I went to somewhere around scotts and orchard road and the price of a dragon wings A330-300 model is only $36. Well, maybe it's because of the quality of Dragon Wings model which make it so cheap. And I also saw an ANA panda B767 which costs $75. That is kinda reasonable, since we are buying ''metal''. So did you check out the other smaller planes like the B777 and A330 from GJ? I am more interested in those

They didn't seem to have any GJ aircraft, however the price of the Phoenix models are unbelievable. Which really put me off, however I do agree with you regarding the Dragon Wing aircraft, I picked up my Air Caraibes for $15AUD which is approximately the same price in SGD. So if you like Dragon it's great, but being a Phoenix fan I was very disappointed with the prices being so high.

I found another store when I was in Singapore, called Time Machine Studio, they sell army dolls, and stuff like that, however in the front window were some aircraft models, so try your luck there as well. Also Nikko is about 2 shops down. The stores are located basically next to the Pan Pacific – Singapore, on Number 9 Raffles Boulevard.

Good Luck,

1/400collec.

What amazes me is that people still buy the Phoenixes at well over S$100 a pop. Fair enough for a rare and sold out and hard to find model, but S$100 for a model you get for 30% of that off Ebay?

Who the hell buys these things!?!?!?!?

Typical Singapore.

The local collectors *HAVE* to have their beloved SQ and CX models and guys at Nikko et al can afford to charge S$180 (thats GBP£90 / US$135 for all you non-Singaporeans) for the new releases.

The problem is the idiots here buy them at that price hoping that they will appreciate in value - 90% of the collectors in Singapore I've met are collecting solely to make money by buying "rare" models. These loons actually think that they will make a margin on an SQ model after spunking up $180 for it.

I think the Ebayndits in Hong Kong have a lot to answer for.

Toystudio Bangkok is excellent and quite cheap as well. If you buy six or more you can usually ask for a further discount.

They do keep "rare" models back under the counter so to speak, so if you ask very, very nicely and are prepared to spend more, they are usually very accommodating.

Well many Singaporeans are obsessed with money and "prosperity".

Its all about what labels you wear/drive/eat/live in over here, and the sad thing is that few over here have any real sense of taste per se - it doesnt matter if it looks good if it says Louis Vuitton or Prada on it. Another example is BMWs and Mercs - there are a lot of basic, entry level 3 series Beemers here. It can argued that Peugeot, Renault, Volvo and Audi all do superior offerings in that class, that cost considerably less. But Singaporeans don't care how it drives etc, they only want the brand. Mercs and BMWs here are much, much more expensive than anywhere else (and thats without the Government car tax which is another issue) - because they know people will pay silly money for the brand.

There are not one but THREE Guccis within 100 yards of each other on Orchard Road and it is quite laughable to see young (and not so young) Singaporeans having their photos taken outside the shop pointing to the sign. They are brand obsessed. Indeed Singapore is the home of "brand fashion" - ie: the fashion IS the brand, not the clothes.

It is instilled into all young people here that success = prosperity and that prosperity = money. In other words it doesnt really matter whether you are married to a beautiful woman and have beautiful kids etc - if you arent "properous" (have money and people see you have money) then you cannot, by definition, be successful or indeed, happy.

Young Singaporean women, typically well-educated and independent, still idealise finding an "ang mo" (white person, whom they automatically think are all very rich and successful and happy) to marry. Its not the man, its the money.

Money money money - Singapore is obsessed with it.

Now, I'm not saying the UK or US do not objectivise money as well, but nothing like to the same degree. It is possible to have money in these countries and not feel the need to wear as many labels etc as possible to show it off, and indeed, it is possible to not have much money but to be happy and successful.

Ask most Singaporeans whether they feel that they can be successful earning less than S$2,000 a month but doing something that makes them happy, and they'll laugh in your face.

So anyway - back to the point.

Singaporean collectors are - with a couple of nice exceptions - mainly in it for the money. You'll find most collectors here will buy 5 or 6 of every SQ and CX release and then add one to their collections and shut the others away in a cupboard for a year or so, then make 300% of what they paid on each model, following the Hong Kong model. Put it this way -if you want that first version SQ 77W PHX model now, its going to come from here or Hong Kong and you'll pay daft money for it. In my experience some collectors here actually label their collections "successful" or "unsuccessful" - ie: how much money they have made on them in real or imagined (nominal value) terms.

The acid test of course is model value. I would respectfully suggest that if you made an all white GJ mould A320 or 737 out here, put it in a nice box and wrote on that box that it is limited to 150 pieces worldwide (even if its not true) and then sold it for $150 - it would sell out. Doesnt matter about the model, its how much it is worth. If its rare and valuable, the collectors here will buy it.

Very sad.

I was shocked by the model price in Singapore and thought the collectors there must be a rich man....just kiduung.
The avarage prices of new released PH B777, B747 and A380 in Taiwan are from US$30~35. Compare with collectors in HK and Singapore, we're in heaven.

In the past I have never bought a single model from any Singapore retailer (save for SIA's KrisShop, if that counts). Everything in my collection comes either direct from SQ or overseas. The only exception was buying a 1:200 747 during the Singapore Airshow. Other than that, I don't plan to start sourcing my models locally.

i tend to agree - Singapore is a place I would avoid to buy models. I have noticed that stupid mark ups put in place there and only DW models are reasonably priced.

There used to be a very good hobby shop on the 1st or 2nd level of the Phoenix hotel in Orchard Rd and the prices were very good.

I would avoid buying ANYTHING in Singapore. Bad customer service, no return policy and outragous prices make it a no-go in my book.

Agreed. Something about this place just makes for bad service being expected as the norm.

The rudest most racist and arrogant people Ive ever met in my life. Full of self entitlement and with absolutely no regard for anyone but themselves.

Blows my mind the amount of times ive seen pregnant woman standing up on the MRT.

You would be amazed if you went to West Main Toys because they have an excellent amount of models including all the new releases and all of them are at reasonable prices. But this will be a different story for extreme rare items such as Japanese Official Models, Phoenix CX Models etc. Toymax's selection isn't as wide as West Main and he doesn't carry some brand such as DW. But you can still get discount from both of them easily, both have good service too.

On the other hand I wouldn't judge Toy Studio in BKK because I haven't been there before but it may worth a stop because the selection on their website is almost as big as West Main's

Sounds like Singapore is the place to avoid if you're on a shopping trip looking for bargains. Never been there myself. I have to say though, of my almost 800 models I have not bought a single one from going to a store, all from the Internet. Never had a real issue, though I do tend to avoid buying from overseas if I can help it. Mainly because it takes so frikkin' long for anything to get here, and they charge more in shipping.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic place to live, but shopping is not one of the reasons. At least not compared to the US. Compared to Australia, perhaps.

I'm going to take this off-topic here, but I've heard that the laws in Singapore are among the harshest in the world, outside of the Middle East. One person was severely caned for vandalism, for instance. I imagine that makes being a criminal in Singapore an unpopular career choice, though.

What makes Singapore a fantastic place to live? I'm curious because my company is sending me on an expat assignment. I have been on vacation and liked it a lot (especially the food ). And I guess as an Ang Mo I'll have no trouble with the ladies...

GJ/PH are any day better than DW!

I have the Herpa LH 744/ CX 744/ SAA A346 and they are all good. But then had they been done by GJ/PH, then I would have preferred to go with their releases.

Also, I have been to Toy Studio in MBK and used WMT through my online transactions, and would any day prefer WMT over ToyStudio due to their better prices and equally good variety! I found Toy Studio's prices to be much more as compared to the various online retailers in the US!

The laws can be harsh, but it's a deterant. But it's not a "police state" -- you only very rarely see police around and it's not like they drag you away for some impromptu caning if they catch you chewing a gum (which is NOT illegal, btw, but gums can only be sold by the pharmacy counter)

Good weather; clean and safe city; lots of greens; great public transportation; good food -- overall very easy lifestyle. The income tax is also very low (10-15%)

If you have kids, you don't have to worry about drugs, gangs, violence and the schools are excellent.

The bad aspects are: very small place; limited choices of good cultural events (coming from NYC); overall terrible shopping; very expensive for almost everything, including housing and cars.

Did you hear they've invented a fool proof cure for male insomnia?

Just sit in a "reserved seat" on the MRT - you instantly fall into a deep sleep waking only when you arrive at your stop. It's amazing. The busier the train is, the more women, babies, elderly people and pregnant women are around, the faster it works. Incredible.

Also did you see about the research into the smallest particles -smaller than a neutron? Well here in Singapore they actually heard it before they saw it. The quietest noise in the history of the universe is a Singaporean saying "excuse me"

As a white ang mo here, I am a second class citizen. Anyone who is not an ethnic Chinese Singaporean is. You stand at a bar and you will always get served after the Singaporean. Stand in a queue and you'll quickly realize that queuing is only for non-Singaporeans. Singaporeans do not queue.

As a white person I'm treated as a second class citizen here but black or Indian subcontinent ethniticy people are much worse off here. They get treated appallingly.

As the Z man says, aside from the price of things, the laughable service and the "artificialness" of it all it is nonetheless a lovely place to live in some respects.

When shopping in Hong Kong, I'd recommend West Main Toys. They have a huge selection of models, and are mostly at reasonable prices.

As for which manufacturer is better, it all depends on the aircraft you're getting. Each manufacturer has good moulds and bad ones.

Manufacturer i have seen the same model in 3 mannufacturers kept side by side and found phoenix to be most detailed and sharply made.
I don't know about you guys but i find phoenix and GJ to be the best and between these two i find that GJ does not have as good landing gear detailing as phoenix and they have those emergency slide out on their wings on some models which comletely pisses me off !

Anyways please suggest more i still have some time to go
Thanks

That's all so contradicting since Singaporeans say they are the ones who are being mistreated because the government places Foreign Talents in priority.

It's the opposite for me...I hardly buy models which don't have the emergency markings on their wings as aircrafts such as A320,777, 737, 767 etc actually have those markings on the real aircrafts, so more realistic the model is the better for me..
