Question Who still collects 1:500

I'm not going to run a poll on this, but am I the only one that has all but stopped buying 1:500 since there's a good variety of 1:400s in the pipeline? I may have bought 2 1:500s in the last year, and just about all my Herpas are back in their boxes.

For me, it's a combination of limited display space and trying to keep the budget from going through the roof. Plus I think the 1:400s, even those from Herpa, have more detail than their smaller brothers.

I don't have any 1:500 scale models. I did buy one, but returned it to the shop I bought it from because it looked completely out of place in a sea of 1:400 models I have. Although some of the stuff I see coming out from StarJets has brought me close, but I've resisted. It's hard enough trying to keep up with the great 1:400 releases (and paying for them)!

The only 1:500 models I buy now are Starjets, albeit in small numbers.

The only types I have are 747-400s and the various DC-8s they make. If they continue to make 74s, and DC-8s, I will continue to buy starjets. I'd buy 707s too.

Most of my collection consists of 1:400s and that is the way it will remain.

Red face I still do...but not as much

I would have to say that I would still like to stick with the 1:500. Although I will say that I don't collect as much as a I used too.

My 1:500 collecting has been confined to Starjets and some Herpa New Generations. Starjets really has some excellent examples ie: Air Jamaica A340, Lan Chile A340 and many others. Herpas New Generation 747 doesn't look too bad.

With another baby due in September I am now collecting diaper coupons. I have a 2 year old daughter and another girl on the way. Future pilots maybe.

I absolutely will continue to collect 1:500 scale. I have 1:500, 1:400 and AeroMinis in my collection.
With Herpa coming out with the NG models and StarJets increasing their number and diversity, I'm all over 1:500. It's easier making the planes fit at my airport, too...

My collection is mainly 1/500, I can fit more in the curio AND on the airport. A 1/500 scale airport is plenty BIG !!

I do buy the 1/400's that I must absolutely own.

I collect the 'Must haves' in 1/400,
whereas the 1/500's are 'absolutes', or everything from StarJets and some of the NG Herpa's.

Question

How do the "NG" Herpas compare with the regular Herpas? Are they the ones with the more realsitic landing gear? My not knowing this shows how much I've been out of the 1:500 business.

New Generation Herpas are quite nice. The TWA 717 is a must. They have scaled gears and most joints are gone.

I had never collected 1/500 until StarJets started. I have all of their releases to date. Recently I've decided to focus only on 1/400, so I've stopped getting the SJs. My collecting budget only stretches so far After all, I'm not one of those rich doctors or airline pilots

No slam against or problem with SJ, just a question of priorities.

I collect Starjets and Herpa NG models. I have compleely stopped buying Herpas with the funny wheels. Some of the NG models are very nice, though Herpa needs to start using a metal finish. Starjets models, like their big brothers at Gemini, are works of art in my opinion.

I have two 1/500 planes.I have a Starjets SIA Tropical that I ordered by mistake.Thought it was 1/400.I also have a Starjets Air India 747-400 that I got free from Skyjets400.
I really like Starjets, but can't afford two collections.

Well like Starliner I first started collecting 1:500 hepas when I was young because my dad had told me they were very scaled and I got my money's worth. However as I got older I started to realise how I was getting ripped off and the detailed sucked. Finally one day I went down to Ryan's Aviation World and saw that a herpa A-320 was the same price as the dragon A-320. And the dragon A-320 was a whole lot better than the herpa one so from then on I collected only 1:400.

Thanks From Sean

I only collect 1:500. Easier on space and the pocketbook! Plus, I have the complete StarJet collection, something that would be nearly impossible with Gemini. I also have about 40 Herpas Regional Jets, and will probably get a New Generation now and then. No "big-wheels" for me, I sold out!

In my opinion StarJets are better than Gemini. They have the exact same details, but in a smaller scale, which equals more realism!

I still buy a few, mostly Starjets and I only bought one Herpa NG.I buy them because they are cheaper and take less room and GJ has not come out with some of the SJ liviers.

Collecting 1:400, 1:500 and AeroMinis. I do like the 1:500 SJ line and need to see a Herpa NG up close to pass judgment on them. Funny... when I got my first Herpa 6-7 yrs ago, I thought it was pretty kewl... cept for the gear proportions. But now with a SJ, it's like nite n' day. The contours of a 747 "bubble" and nose look much more accurate on the SJ than on the Herpas. Has that changed on the Herpa NGs? The SJ Indian 747-4 is a gem.

Thumbs up StarJets, that's it.

I collect StarJets, becasue the detail is good, quality is excellent and the scale means that I can display more in a smaller space (they're somewhat easier to manage).

I also started later, and wanted a complete collection, so Gemini Jets was out for me, especially with the growing number of harder to find models. StarJets were almost all still readily available, so the choice for me was an easy one.

Default I do !!

I have gone "back to roots" and have sold about half of
my 1:400 collection. My diorama is dedicated to 1:500
(www.tjkia.de). Since the arrival of StarJets, 1:500 is
even more fun. C&C fills some nice gaps and it is rumored
that by end of the year another 1 or 2 will start production
of 1:500 as well.

Long live 1:500 !!

Well....I'm a major 1:400 collector but I have a few 1:500's too. I will continue to stay on course with my 1:400 collection since I really love this. I will only buy 500s when those birds got my attention that I couldn't resist.

Unfortunately still have lots of old Herpas which I've almost all but stopped buying in 1:500 scale. The Starjets are fantastic but I only have a few of them and still occassionally collect them if budget allows after having bought 1:400's.

I still buy old herpa models, I just like to show off my collection at my model airport. Only people who see that are non-collectors and they dont know the difference.
