Does anyone know how in hell Channel Airways got away with such an obvious copy of the CO Golden Jet livery, including even a "Continental Golden Jet" tag on the tail???? I've always wondered this. Bob Six must not have appreciated it!

When Channel Airways acquired 11 Viscounts from Continental in 1966/7, the existing livery was adopted almost fully, receiving little more than a change of titling. The owners of Channel claimed they admired it so much. Having said that, Channel were so strapped for cash I guess they had very little option when it came to buying paint. Tridents, 748s and 1-11s ordered by Channel were delivered new in the "Golden Jet" scheme from the makers.

I am sure when Channel bought their Viscounts from Continental, this was agreed at the time and I'm sure Continental were highly flattered by this!
Maybe we'll see Continental and Channel Viscount releases together with so few livery changes required?

For those interested just a little more on this. In 1961 the owner of Channel made a trip to Continental showning interest, (or so he claimed) in buying three of their B707s soon to be put up for sale. How serious that interest was is open to speculation but no doubt COA were happy to know that they had a buyer's interest. The B707 "Golden" livery was seen and liked by said visitor and is highly likely that some sort of deal regarding livery was done at time. Mr Channel airways (a very shrewed chap) no doubt had his eyes on the Viscount 800 fleet that were due to be displaced by the recent DC-9-10 order. At the end of 1962 Channel bought the troubled Tradair including its sole Viscount 700, (co-incidentaly a series V707) and promptly painted it in an almost exact copy of the Continental livery. Emblazoned on the fin were the words "Golden Viscount 707". Other aircraft in the fleet were soon painted up including the Doves and Herons. Therefore, no surprise that a little later when Continental's V800 fleet was bought by Channel only a minimal paint job was all that was necessary. The rest is History.
