A sneek-peek at the what will be our first Sonic Cruiser release. This is basically the Boeing design from a while back. Our brand new model will be based on my interpretation sketch. It is purely fantasy.
The Boeing model and sketches were used as reference and have been scaled up to something a little bigger with more attitude. Roughly 777-300 size, with many modifications made to the cockpit windows, larger 787-like pax windows, revised canards, enlarged tail fins, APU, and my favorite mod - vectored thrust nozzles. The thrust nozzles, for now, will be fixed. Why were they added? Only because they look cool. Would they work? Yup! The color scheme will be a JAS scheme designed by motion picture director Akira Kurosawa. Seven designs were produced for the "Fly the Rainbow" series, and appeared on the company MD-90's. This particular design, IMHO, should have been used fleet-wide...so here it is again~ Next schemes are being considered now. If you have any suggestions, post them! This is purely a fantasy plane, and understand for many, thats a no go. For the Sonic Cruiser fans, though, here's our first go!!! This is being made just because we like it, and hope to share a few with the collectors in the same mind set. Check out our blog link for the latest updates too! Front, top, and bottom profiles of this model will appear as we get closer to release. There will be a three-view poster release available on Ebay through "Flystuff4u". The most anyone can do is make the Sonic Cruiser fantasy as believable as possible by using details, science, technology and design borrowed from the real world wherever possible. There is much more reality evident here than any Star Wars or Star Trek design, yet such fantasy creations are well respected by many, including model collectors worldwide. In fact, some of the highest prices ever paid for a model included the studio model of Enterprise D from Star Trek for $576,000 in October 2006 at a Christies Auction. While the Sonic Cruiser fantasy may not be desired by many DAC collectors, or not ever seen in a famous movie or television series, there should be some interest in such a model if it is well done. Additionally, the Sonic Cruiser is still based on a serious real design project by Boeing that was cancelled in December 2002.

Thanks for the encouragement SF! As mentioned, this is purely an exercise in fantasy. It was a lot of fun to figure out how this aircraft would look as a high-capacity near speed of sound vehicle. The three-view sketch revealed a rather massive airplane. Stay tuned JR is very busy sculpting!
Thanks for the JAS pic. In any colors, the MD-90 rocks! Herb- Last edited by Junkcollector; 04-13-2008 at 11:40 PM. |

My questions.
1. How much will these cost and how does one order the model or is it only via ebay? 2. Can I request one to be made in the old ochre and the last and the very new Qantas liveries? 3. If these can be ordered, can they be shipped to Australia? |

This is very cool!! Congrats!
Will it be a metal or plastic model? I want one for sure! Does anyone know what airlines expressed interest in the Boeing SST when it was being developed? It would be nice to have some models with those liveries. aViatOr

Just a little peek at what will be in NYC in about two weeks. This will be also be released as a image revised to all JAS views without scrap images on Ebay soon. Look for it!

Hi SF,
Yes...ultra-long range flights. This airplane would operate between city pairs such as Buenos Aires/-Shanghai nonstop (19,595 km), Madrid Spain-Wellington, New Zealand (19,800km) Heathrow-Hong Kong (21,602km),Seattle-Kuala Lumpur (20,044km). The particular sonic cruiser concept is about 300' in length (see comp photo with 777-300), with a wingspan around the same. It would incorporate folding wingtips (as the 777 was originally was shown to have), to access the current wide-body stands. It (VERY) loosely resembles the Convair Nuclear bomber concept. The larger wings also will allow for numerous fuselage stretches in the future w/o major re-engineering. Last edited by Junkcollector; 04-16-2008 at 06:57 AM. |

I'd say, "Do it!" What would be the fuselage length of the Super Stretch? Is the total wingspan still around 300'? Wow, this surely would be an impressively enormous aircraft! I would like to see it scaled in plan view next to a 747, and even the Hughes H-4 Hercules "Spruce Goose" for size comparison. It also looks great in the American Airlines colors.
If you're going to incorporate fixed vectored thrust nozzles, could I suggested that they be fixed in the straight and level position? It looks expensive and complex, if it were real. As a fantasy model, I still like it. Are you going to include landing gear with this model? It would be interesting to see how airports might need to modify gate arrangements to accomodate air taxi control safety with such extra large aircraft if they were real. The folding wings are a definate must. Can we also see how your Sonic Cruiser would look with the wings folded, when you have time? Last edited by SFView; 04-21-2008 at 04:26 AM. |

the same as the other scratch builders. For me, its important to able to park it at your fantasy terminal,(the one shown in my sketch is under construction), Ive just laid down the blueprints and have styrene ready to go. As for the folding wings; they will be a custom option. Since the ship at the gate in the poser image has plenty of breathing space, the wings are down. Perhaps later on this week, I can portray a wings up. Herb~ |

If the first production model is going to be without gear, how will it be assured that the record large 1/400 scale model will balance well on its display stand? |

Until I have any more precise measurements, here is what I have of approximate sizes of the upcoming Mirage Models discussed in this thread so far (actual model dimensions shown within parenthesis):
Imperial Sonic Cruiser: 300' (9") L x 300' (9") W Sonic Cruiser Super Stretch: 350' (10.5") L x 300' (9") W A2 Hypersonic: 469' (14") L x ? W Metric Sonic Cruiser: 91m (229mm) L x 91m (229mm) Sonic Cruiser Super Stretch: 107m (267mm) L x 91m (229mm) A2 Hypersonic: 143m (356mm) L x ? W Does anyone have a wingspan dimension for the A2? These will be some of the largest 1/400 aircraft models ever made! Last edited by SFView; 04-25-2008 at 01:00 AM. |

The wing/engine arrangement looks like it was lifted straight from the M50 Bounder!
