According to Terry Waddington's DC-8 book (Great Airliners), the length of the DC-8-61 and 63 series is 183 feet.
183 ft = 55778.4 mm is in 1:400: 139.5 mm. ----------------------------------------------------------- AC DC-8-63 (Air Afrique) measures 139 mm (tailcone to nose) GJ DC-8-71 (United) measures 142 mm. (tailcone to nose) DC-8-71 wingspan is 142.36 feet. ------------------------------------------------------------ 142.36 = 43391.33 mm is in 1:400: 108.5 mm. GJ DC-8-71 (United) measures 106 mm. DC-8-63 wingspan is 148.36 feet ------------------------------------------------------------ 148.36 = 45220.13 mm is in 1:400: 113.1 mm. AC DC-63 (Air Afrique) measures 113 mm. Difficult to measure the volume of the fuselage but the GJ seems a bit bulkier as well. Anyway, really like the new GJ DC-8's so not complaining, just an observation ![]() |

My point is that the GJ DC-8's are not quite to scale and 2 to 3 mm is rather a large discrepancy.

Gemini Jets puts as real as it gets on the box so excuse for me for being bloody picky about it. O sorry I forgot we're only supposed to be critical of blue box, etc.

I Think The Most Accurate Is The First AC DC-8-61/63 Such As Nordair, Quebecair, National & The Big Bird JAL On The AC Mould. Quote:
I've Noted The Discrepacies For A Long Time, But I've Lived With It & Accepted It. Though Some Say I'm Looking For 100% Accuracy. Owning Both The AC & Gemini DC-8s In My Collection Dispels That Stupid Myth Because The Differences Are Quite Large. Poeple Need To Remember 2 Or 3 MM In This Scale Represents 2 Or 3 Feet. I Think Gemini Removed The Real As It Gets Sloagan From Their Boxes Because They've Been Surpassed & They Know It. Last edited by L-1011-Heavy; 04-05-2008 at 02:58 PM. |

Wow, are you really complaining about 3mm?
"As real as it gets" is just a slogan. Does Bayer aspirin really work wonders? Is BMW really the ultimate driving machine? Is British Airways really the world's favorite airline? Etc. |

True, Those Are General Sloagans, But Gemini Terademarked Theirs. That Means It's More Than Just A General Advertising Catch Phrase. They Meant It. And They Wanted Collectors To Believe it. If The Sloagan Was As Simple as The Others, They Wouldn't Have Removed It From Their Boxes. Last edited by L-1011-Heavy; 04-05-2008 at 04:37 PM. |

Plus the real DC-8-63/-73 has a bigger wingspan than the DC-8-61/-71..right?

If this goes on, GJ might even have to remove the 1:400 scale marking on their boxes as well! ![]() ![]() aViatOr |

All DC-8's mean alot to me. These small mm variances I read about and value the info, hoping the manufacturers read it to improve. That being said, I like them all in 400th AC or GJ. I don't, and never will profess to be an expert on the models. I like them. Faults and no faults. If I didn't I wouldn't buy any.

Well I notices that the door frames on my GJ DHL D8-71 were 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000001mm too big and I sent it back cause the attention to detail is appalling with such blinding errors!

You don't eat enough Vegemite! I agree and I was joking too. I threw my micrometer down the toilet a long time ago. I get a great deal of enjoyment from my hobby and all the models in my collection. My diorama is the best part of all cause it puts an interactive element to these little critters. Vegemite rules! |

Has anyone tried to determine if the airplanes have the correct scale weight? I assume we will need to base the scale weight as a "zero fuel weight" base, since there doesn't seem to be any liquid in the tanks.

Apparently There's Some Sort Of Sphisticated Mathematical Forula For That. Don't Ask, I'm Not Steven Hawkins.
However It Would Be Light As Paper To Be True To Weight Scale. Not Possible With Current Materials. |

... um, I was like kidding...
I agree models should be as accurate as possible, but I am not going to let a measurement that is a mm off ruin the joy of owning an otherwise fine model. |

Well his post certainly was fun for all. Couldn't resist a quick calculation but aircraft weight would be over 150kg each which would call for some sturdy shelves
![]() Agree with most of what's been said. I think that if it took me all of 10 minutes to do a quick calc and pull out a ruler, so could GJ... and AC does get it right. Wouldn't stop me anytime from buying something I like and can't wait till the DC-8-73 in new DHL colours hits the market regardless of size. Also have some Dinky's I enjoy a lot and definately not 100% to scale. Think we've exhausted the topic a bit, .. |

HOLLLLLLY CHET.The whole reason I never use to post on these forums. But, I really do need to say something. Get a damn life! I have a grip of GJ DC-8's and they look great. I never thought of measuring the fuselage though. I have mine displayed, and not once has someone come over and said "gee bro have you noticed that the DHL DC-8 is off about 3mm". Keep in mind I fly for CO, and have had friends who come over to the house and have seen the planes.
Go get an EHarmony account, and meet someone. I mean they have a catchy slogan too, "real people, real advice". Last edited by Leroy_Nugget; 04-06-2008 at 02:54 PM. Reason: spelling edit |
