During my brief time here at DAC, I have noticed that people enjoy fleet-building. I am interested in narrowing down my collection somehow, although I don't have a lot, I lack a direction to go in. If I bought what I liked, I would buy everything. Any suggestions as to what airline I could fleet-build? Or any way to narrow my broad collection requirements.
Thanks

It's going to sound obvious, but the best place to start would be with an airline you like, and then see if there's a great selection of planes available for you to purchase and collect.
Otherwise, just pick an airline that would satisfy your requirements, either with colourful schemes, or just one that offers loads of variety in aircraft type etc. All the best with it in any case! Dan

Yes, if you plan on fleet building, go with an airline that you like...something that may be near to your heart. Hopefully, there's a good selection of models to choose from in the airline and livery combo you select. But if not, you could just do what I'm doing and make some customs!
Even though I've been collecting for nearly 10 years, I have never considered fleet building until very recently. Up until a few months ago, I didn't have more than one of any model in my collection. However, I picked up a second Jet-X USAir MD-80 in 1990s colors, and plan to expand on the USAir fleet some more. USAir is an airline I grew up with in Syracuse, NY, and I'd like to have a nice fleet of everything in 1990s colors. I just finished up a custom USAir 727-200 in 1990s colors, which I absolutely love, and am considering doing a custom DC-9-30 (the Net Models one looks like garbage) and 757-200. I really hope Aeroclassics does an F-28-1000 and -4000 in USAir colors, and I'm hoping somebody comes out with a nice Fokker 100 mold sometime in the future. I think it'll happen. I'm also working on building up my Delta fleet, because starting in college, they became my favorite airline. I went bonkers when they came out with the 2000 "Deltaflot" colors. Some people hate it, but I thought it was great, and I loved it on the 727-200. I would purposely schedule myself on as many 727 flights as I could whenever I flew somewhere so I could try and get on the ones in new colors. I eventually got on 6 of the 8 in new colors. Anyway, my goal is to have a big ol' fleet of Delta birds in Widget, interim, and 2000 colors to represent how the fleet looked around 2000-2003, which was my favorite period for Delta for a variety of reasons. I've got a custom 737-200 in mainline 2000 colors in the works, and will be starting on a 737-200 and -300 in interim colors soon. I'm also going to spruce up some DW 737-800s too (they look too toy-like out of the box). It should be a pretty impressive collection by year's end! Last edited by asj410; 03-27-2008 at 11:02 PM. |

Great advise from the 2 previous individuals. This is just my opinion. It's really a personal choice. THe fact that a direction to head in is a "must -do" not only for this hobby, but for everything, and I compliment you on wanting to have this, and to ask for suggestions to help you decide. The path that you take could be: 1 airline, 1 type of aircraft, jet or prop, what you have flown on, what lands at your airport, Boeing, Airbus, US vs Foreign airlines, actual vs fantasy models, any combination of these. As you can see, from just a few criteria that I use, the choices are endless. The fun part is researching the particular aircraft you're after, finding it in scale-model, and then, if you're lucky, finding someone who not only has it, but at the $ you're lookin for ! To me this is the most exciting, and rewarding, part of the hobby. The best part, again just my thoughts here, is you will meet a lot of great people during your "collecting career". I hope that this tidbit of info is of value to. I welcome other members to expand on these thoughts for you, because if I do, you will more than likely want to, and should, see what others have to say. Have a great time collecting.

What I am planning on doing is try to re-create McDonnell Douglas' factory in Long Beach this summer. Not the whole thing, just the hangar with the iconic "Fly DC Jets" that sat on top of the hangar. I have a lot of DC-10's, DC-9's and some others like MD-80's that I can add on and make a nice recreation of that airfield. I will do others later on but now I am trying to get some more DC-9's that I like and add them to my collection.
It depends on what you want to do. I really collect by aircraft type and airline that I know, remember, seen, or heard of and that is what I do. It also depends on taste too.

Guys, thank you for all the in-depth advice that you have given to me. I really appreciate it. It will probably take me some time to decide what to do, but whatever it is, you will bet that it has something to do with my homeland, the pacific northwest. Again, thank you for all of your advice.

That is a complexing question! The thing is I like the histories of many airlines inturn fleet building just happens. This the nature of the airline. Take your avatar of Horizon. I have Horizon fleet with my Alaska's, Jet America and Coastal Ellis.
