Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
Sounds great Steve!
I've visited Melbourne twice in the past 5 years, and have had the pleasure of meeting up with some of the local collectors when visiting CAM. Looking forward to the next visit!!

Hope YOU enjoyed the Very large diorama made by me in May 2002.!!
pity its in 500 scale but space limitations and Rob J personal interests in this scale and the scope it gave me, made this a project i must say i am very proud of, and hope next time you are in Adelaide, look me up as i am sure we can get some Adelaide collectors together for a meet up!

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
I have enjoyed meeting some of the SYD collectors when I have been there and they are a great opportunity to share our hobby. (All thanks to the motivation of the youngling Abraxas!)
I am looking forward to this Saturday when the ADL collectors get together for the first time. Looking forward to the beer also because it is going to be hot this coming weekend.
I was surprised to find out how many ADL collectors there are and they keep popping out of the woodwork. Let's see where this will take us.

AK, do let us know when you're due 'down under' and I'm sure there'll be enough of us to give you a warm welcome and catch up. One thing us Sydney (and Australian alike) collectors do like doing is talking about and sharing our passion for these diecast models!

Thanks Dan. That spoting place was really nice. The planes that went by looked really close by.
As for the taxi fare, I just paid what was stated on the meter plus the taxes. So nothing I could really argue. If the taxi driver took a longer route, honestly, I would not have known.
I'm hoping to be back to Sydney sometime later this year & maybe try the tarmac tours.

As a former Singapore resident, I need not have to say more!!
There are plenty of great memories I plan to replicate; currently working though, on the stuff from across the causeway, and across the straits!!

Andrew,
Does that mean there is a MH DC-10 in the current livery on the way and potentially a Garuda too??
I'll be up for those if it's a yes.

I Remember those first malaysia DC-10 coming to Adelaide in the current colours so would be a significant addition to my and many other collectors collections that I am sure.

Recycling the post AGAIN!
Sydney collectors, let's start planning our next meet. (Yep, we already had one this year at Sydney airport where 2 of us showed up!).
So, let's collate some ideas on a place, time, and who's coming etc so we can make a go of this.
Looking forward to your ideas, and meeting some new people too.

I would love to join in Dan but sadly it will be a while before I get back to SYD.

Come on guys/gals. We got it together here in ADL and had a fantastic day with 5 out of 6 able to make it, so make it happen, find a pub, organise a day and take it from there. Guaranteed, the people you will meet will amaze and delight you, friendships will be formed and your hobby will grow even stronger.

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
Thanks guys for the rallying! We didn't do too bad last year with Unicorn, QFA388 and myself being the regulars on the two Hobbyco occassions. We were hoping for a few to come spotting at the airport, but maybe we picked the wrong day.
Tim, let us know when you start coming back. I'll be sure to let you know when/if I go to Adelaide at some point
Sydneysiders, we got plenty of collectors, would be great to get us all together.

The range in Hobbyco QVB has been a little poor lately - does anyone else think that ?

Yes, its piss poor because the staff there are also.
The guys at Rhodes do a much better job with limited space.
That said, I would be happy to meet people at the QVB for a meet.

I felt exactly the same way as you guys do. I went to Hobbyco in QVB about 2 wks ago and was absolutely shock and disgusted to see the way the models were displayed on the shelves. They didnt just pile the models all over the place but they were also pile on top of one another. The cabinets were also damn dirty, full of dusts to an extent that the models on the top shelf are hardly visible(and I'm not exaggerating).
What's even more infuriating is that they expect customers to buy models in such a poor condition from them !! The staff over there would probably never imagine that there're alot of people out there who treasure those little and delicate toys so much that they avoid touching them fearing that they would left fingerprints on the models.

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
It is really difficult to get someone to serve you. The guys up there always seem to fussing over R/C cars etc - not that there is anything wrong with that but at least put the planes with the model trains!!!
The cabinets seem disorganised and I was in there the other day and ready to make a purchase and walked out with nuthin!
Rhodes is far better - they seem to still hold the new releases and the display is more compact and interesting - staff there are not so bad.
The store at Macarthur Sq is excellent also - great selection and always has new stock as its so far away nobody buys there!!!
Oh - Toms Hobbies at West Ryde is now stocking a few more models - mostly 1:500 but there is a few nice items there.

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
I had my first QVB visit last weekend, and I saw the BA B727 3-set there, but they had stacked them so badly I couldn't make out the price. After hovering and oscilating around the cabinet for ages, right next to one of the staff members who was doing 'something' except serving customers, I went up to the desk to one of the staff who was talking with another one.
The guy knew nothing about planes, but he did let me find out the price. $97.30 for three B727's!?!?!??! Then he went on to say how he liked the Union Flag livery, but it reminded him of the USA!? WTF!? Aih... I didn't take the models, I could get them for $65AUD from ebay :| He went back to the counter to make sure the other staff member had the 1/200 display of Wooster Qantas models looking pretty.
I prefer Rhodes, and I'll get them to order stuff in from the city store if I have to now I think... I dunno, city's a long way to go!
Anyway, back on topic... where does everyone want to meet then? And when...
We've got one vote for Hobbyco QVB... if we go there, I'd hope it'll be a weekend then.

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
I been with Dan to Rhode last time, haven't been to Hobbyco in QVB but the
way you guys describe it sound pretty bad business. As for the meet up where ever and when ever if i'm free i'll be there. Wouldn't mind the International airport seeing those birds landing and taking off. A fully sick place to meet up and chat!, if we go there must hat along, got sunburn last time .

I would try to get a few days off and might even drive over to SYD so I had mobility while there. It's only about a 16hour drive but very enjoyable. Then I could head to the SYD aerodrome for some spotting.
I certainly have some models and stuff (like haven't we all!) that I could put onto a stall.
This sounds great!!

What!!!! only 9 hours of max. fun.
What is wrong with the world...
I am trying to arrange some leave and will prolly drive over for 4-5 days so I can hit the model show and then spend some time at the aerodromes taking pics. Oh yeah and visit the rellies too
Then a liesurely 2 day drive home.
I'm actually quite chuffed about this will have a boot load of goodies. May need to hijack the corner of someones stall but hey, we're all mates!

I am thinking of offloading some of the models I have that don't meet my collecting criteria.
Mostly non-Australian / New Zealand / Oceania / Cargo
I would be happy to talk to anyone who is interested in some interesting models.

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
Excellent that you guys are in for this! Would love to do some spotting with any of the guys whilst you're down in Sydney-town as well if time permits.
Unicorn, would be interested to see what planes you have in mind for shifting? I'm also thinking of bringing a few down to offload. Might post up a list closer to the event date. Maybe a few of us could pitch in for a stall rather than buying a stall each? (I don't have that many planes to move).
Steve, I think there's a Formule F1 hotel in Wentworthville which mightn't be too far from there... I'm not 100% on my locations but I think Guildford's in that area between Bankstown and Parramatta.

I have some models to sell/swap also.
Happy to share a stall with others.
I will bring some airline memorabilia too (Mmmm, Ansett )
I have a greenlight so far but will firm up arrangements nearer the event.
Dan,
let me know what days during the week you can get away from work and I will happily join you at the airport for some piccy taking.
Gotta get there early to catch the bigbird.

I am really looking forward to the break from work.
That is why I plan to take the two days to drive over and will stay with rellies for the week. At least I will have mobility while I'm in town.
I'm planning to spend some lazy days at the aerodrome and at the toy shops before heading home around thurs/fri. Again another two days driving but it's such a great trip.

Few more days to go, can't wait! I guess I am extremely fortunate that I live very close to the hobbyshow venue, considering that many of the collectors have to travel from interstate.

OK, do you know where the exact location, e.g what the landmark or the nearest street to look for so won't be having trouble finding the place on Sunday?

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
Ok, first is it depends whether you are driving or catching a train. For me I'll be catching a train and as indicated on the map, it's pretty close to the station. Should only take about 20 mins walk from station.
Sorry I can't post a pic of the map but just go to
street-directory.com.au
whereis.com
and search for Marian St Guildford NSW, you should then get a very clear idea of where the place is.

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
Guys just so you know, there will be small directional signs up on the day so hopefully they will make it easier to find!

Re: Sydney Collectorates Meetup
Hey All,
Didn't end up doing any Sydney spotting yesterday - the weather was pretty poor for it I have to admit. Was just wondering if anyone would be up for a try at it this long weekend (weather permitting of course)? I think though I'm busy Sunday, so can only arrange a trip on the Saturday or Monday.
Obviously being a Long weekend people will probably have plans though.
