This is one of the die cast toy models that I purchased at one of the last all-airliner memorabilia shows that I attended, at Elizabeth, NJ in September 2004. It is an AeroClassics National Airlines Super Constellation, with wing tip tanks and even air stairs. I like this color scheme, as it is very lively.

I Still Have To Get This One. Though The 1049 Is A Far Better Mould Than The L-188 I Bought The L-188 Instesad. Why? Because I LOVE The Metal Cheatline Around The Passenger Windows, Just Awsome. The 1049 Has A White Cheatline, Which If I Never Saw The Metal Color, I'd Be More Than Happy With.

I love this model! National flew them in all coach configuration mainly northeast cities to Florida. Oddly, it is a L 1049H, a dedicated freighter version of the Super Connie, and why National flew them with wing tanks is even more odd since they certainly didn't need the extra range they offered. Nevertheless, they cut a classy image.

was to carry 'extra' fuel during the winter months so that these connies could stay airborne over their destination longer without to divert to an alternate airport which sometimes was about an hour or more away. Remember flying time was 6 hours or longer with these aircraft and with 'hang time' extra fuel was needed. Plus given that the engines on these birds were of the R-3350-36WA with fuel injection they were not necessarily the most economical airliners out there. At least not like the Douglas DC-6 with their R-2800 engines which were both economical both in terms of fuel and maintenence.
These birds flew non-stop from Miami to the west coast as well as New York and Boston. |
