The Pacemaker name originated from the early days of Tom Davis' company, Piedmont Aviation.

In 1940, Piedmont Aviation was in the business of aircraft sales, service, flight training and rentals. It was during this early period that the company came up with the motto, "Piedmont Sets The Pace". When the airline division of Piedmont Aviation was established in early 1948, they started to call their DC-3 aircraft, Pacemakers. The name was a tribute to the Wright Brother's famous first flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., the home state of Piedmont Airlines. Hence, the Wright Brothers started the pace in North Carolina and Piedmont continued the pace.

I beg to differ! We still need Mr. Klein to produce the Series 100 Boeing 727 in the Piedmont tuxedo livery, always the best one.
