Default Aeroflot IL-96 question

With all the bad press regarding Russian built airliners, I was wondering if one feels safe riding on an Aeroflot IL-96-300.

I may have to go to Russia on business and although I am looking foward to riding on an Aeroflot IL-96, a part of me isn't so sure about how safe it is compared to riding on a western airline and airliner.

last I heard the Il96s had been grounded. At least the Aeroflots had. If you fly from South Korea to Moscow there is a chance that you could fly on a 767 anyway. If the IL96 has been reinstated the it would be pretty safe. The president of Russia flys on a Russian built airplane. He must think it safe. I have a friend who is a flight attendant with Aeroflot who flys exclusively on Aeroflot Russian aircraft (Aeroflot has two flight groups-those that fly Airbus and Boeing and those that fly Russian built) anyway she has for years flown with the Russian group and she is till alive to tell about it. You have no worries.

Has the Il-96 had any major accidents or hull losses? From what I understand they are built pretty tough.

In The Mid 1970s, I Collected Playing/Collector Cards From A Company called "Trump"

In Those Days It Was Either A TU-154 Or Il-62. There Were Specs & A Breif Synopsis Of The Aircraft. The Caption Said "Not Exactly Elegant, But Reliable."

Anyone Know Anything About These? I'd Like To Know Where To Get Some.

I´ve heard that the Aeroflot Il-96 were grounded because of break problems. The pilots were angry about this decision but the airline maintenace dept. decided to park the aircrafts until the problem has been solved. That´s what I have heard on the web.

I hope it helps.

BTW, flying to Russia and didn´t fly in a Aeroflot / russsian plane is unacceptable. I sugest you to choose a route you can take a ride on a -86 or a Tupolev. You´d remember it for all your life, but if you fly a 767...boring.

Hi Min!
Although Aeroflot grounded their IL-96 fleet late Summer, they are now certified as safe after some modifications to the braking system.
I flew the IL-96 from SVO-HKG last year, and it was a nice flight. My next IL-96 flight is planned for 2006-1-30, from SVO-PKC, and I have no hesitation in flying on that aircraft.
I hope you have a great flight too!

All Russian planes are unsafe. We all know that.

Most of the russian airplanes are pretty safe, I've been on board of TU-134
TU-154 (MALEV) AN-24 (LOT) IL-86, many times flew with AEROFLOT.
It's true,- most of these types are aging, but Russia have the same rules
about safety, as we have here. And if they won't be able to come up their own newer models,- they will be getting western build airplanes, as China does.

There is interesting site: www.avia.ru - You can find some intresting info about what's going on in Russia and around the world in english version also.

I have heard it many times but I am not sure. Here in Latin America most of the people think like that because Cubana hasn´t a good reputation.

That´s my 02$.

One has to remember what Soviet airliners were designed to do. They were built to fly into very rough airports in very inhospitable climates where maintainence facilities were primitive ( lack of hangars, etc) in the worst weather on earth, and they did just that. The Soviet Union, and many of the older socialist nations did not have modern commercial navigational aids. This made the need for navigators a primary concern, and accounted for the wonderful glazed noses of many former Soviet airliners. Which of us wouldn't have paid extra for THAT seat? With a heavy reliance of former Soviet design bureaus of the philosophy of KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid), they produced a wide range of aircraft that while not always as sophisticated as those in the West, still managed to fly in terrible weather to the ends of the earth and deliver vital payloads on airstrips that many Western aircrews would refuse (justifiedly) to operate from.
