Default For Money or Fun

I don't get this whole 1:400 business - they seem to produce many quality models (and some dogs once and a while as well...), however the airline liveries chosen baffle me - if I wanted to make money producing airplane models, I'd make those that sell in significant quantities to the masses. This would probably exclude most of the planes Nordair ever flew, not to mention the Iberia constellation, and would include some models such as:

Eastern DC8 Hockey Stick
National DC8 Stretch
Western Flying W 727/737
Southern DC9, final scheme
Northwest Orient 707, 727-100
TWA Convair 880 Double Globe
Ozark F-27
Frontier Convair 500
British Airways 747, L1011, 707 mid 70's scheme
Avianca 707/747

And so on - I've never seen so many off the wall versions for sale, in limited quantity, when more mainstream offerings, I'd think, would make the greatest ROI. Maybe I'm wrong, I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of the manufacturers.

Cool These will be made

In due time, in due time. If you just realize that about 15-20 releases come out each month. That amounts at a minimum of 180-250 relases per year. These will be made eventually. Hang in there!

Airman62, the reason is simple: if all the popular models collectors have been clamoring for over the past few years were released, many (myself included) would declare their collections "complete" and leave the hobby. So all those TWA 722s, Delta 752 widgets, etc., etc. that we really, really want will eventually be released, just like Shandaken says, but just don't hold your breath in the meantime.

Perfect example: anybody seen Wingman lately? After that TWA 747SP was released, we never saw him again.

I heard that Wingman went to ground after a past LAX show when he pissed off several diecast principals. Anyone heard from him since then? I think it was 2002.

A version of the Ozark F-27 is out there. I saw a photo of one the other day posted on one of the forums by a collector and I have seen others around. Shandaken made a good point.

Ahh good 'ole Wingman; He was the kind lad who returned several "missing models" to me which were stolen off my table by certain (I won't name them) SMACboyz! I guess they were the pissed off principals whose escapades were exposed by this "missing person".

I gotta disagree with this one. While I have an official 'list' that I 'try' to adhere to in terms of deciding what things to get, and I do have a wishlist, just completing that would not necessarily mean I was 'finished.' There always seems to be something new that catches my interest. The USAir/Allegheny pack was not something I had on my list, but I certainly decided to get it. So even if a few more items come out that would complete some collections, there will always be that new or different or enchanting model that will keep a large number of people interested in this hobby,

Do you suppose that the people who know where Wingman is also know where Jimmy Hoffa is? Stole models from the table at an airliner show? Nasty. That must have been the same day that Gemini Jets snapped the photo of Andrew for use on the Mexicana box.

Default For fun or money

Interesting topic this is.
From reading the threads about this hobby, I think there no single reason why some models are made and others are not.
I have no problem seeing and buying some of the odd ball airliner models as long as the more popular ones are available also.
Actually I hope I don't get everything I want too soon. I'd probably get bored of the hobby. I grew up in the 60s and always wanted to have a representation of airliners from that time. It does not stop me from buying modern types or unusual models when they appeal to me.
I think the Nordair connie models are great! So are the Electras. Would I prefer Eastern, National, or American? Of course, but I appreciate a great model even if it isn't of a favorite carrier. But if the model is good and I can afford it, I will buy it. I was not aware of Aeroclassics when they first appeared and I've waited a long time for models of this kind as I am sure many others have. I appreciate what I have been able to get so far and have no reason to doubt I will continue to see more great models from most of the manufacturers.
