Default Your biggest disappointment of 2003 in 1/400?

My largest disappointment is ofcourse, not getting the models I wanted made. All the models in my collection I have I am overall VERY pleased with, so no disappointments with regards to quality. Im just so damn picky.

Since I missed the latter half of the year playing Air Force. . . was unable to keep a good update on the 1/400 scene. . . but wondering if any of these made it out of the manufactuers this past few months. . .

Comair / ASA / Skywest CRJ? Or pretty much any other damn CRJ in 1/400?
Delta MD80-90 series?
Delta 752 NNC, NOC?
AirTran 717?

I think thats it. . . if those didnt get released. . . guess those are my disappointments for this year

Who's next?

surreal: i aggree, i'd also love to have seen a song 757

I think a dissappointment of mine was probably JetX. They are known for releasing some great planes, and this year there wasn't much. Just a bunch of fantasy models, retro models or models that were announced but never released. Like the GSE which was supposed to be out in the fall is now finally going to be out in late Jan. in Hawaiian colors. An airline that i am not interested in buying a good number of GSE sets for.

Hopefully we will see a better year for Jet-X. Hopefully many GSE sets will come out by spring.

I think the same goes with DW, they announced some great models and half of them we still haven't seen, and others we saw extremely late. Now they are trying to make every possible scheme with their concorde, rather than using their underused great MD-80 or 717 mould.

My biggest disspointment was all the bitcha$$ whining, carping, complaining, pissing and moaning from Gemini, Tucano, some colletors and some retailers. STFU already.

Right on! My biggest disappointment, is the Gemini bashing that happened this year. Without even seeing the models released, opinions were made, and put-out on this (and other) forums.

My second disappointment, would have to be Dragon. They're still unconscious. In the begining of the year, they put out a 'mini-video' on their site, which showed the new moulds that were set to be released this year (Concorde and Super Connies) but the Concorde looks disappointing, and the Connies didn't arrive till December, and were equally disappointing. Here's to hoping they'll revive themselves in '04....

Biggest disappointment overall is the same as always--a serious lack of the main schemes of the main airplanes of the major airlines. Notably TWA twin-stripe, DL widget, and USAir. Hey, we're STILL at ZERO USAir triple-red planes in all of 1/400. There's now molds for 90% of their fleet, yet we still don't have any. What's it take, huh? 5th-largest airline in the world (depending on the year) not enough to warrant some models? And USAir in any scheme is woefully under-represented.

And NW red/gray---the entire fleet could be done with in 1 month, if GJ and DW just released some stuff. I'd like a GJ 727, A319, and A320, and DW MD-80, DC-10, and 742. You'd think they'd make some just to shut us up. Same with UAL red/orange/blue--just do the last couple ones, we'll be happy and quiet. GJ should start with the 757 of course.

As for specific disappoinment--DW's AA A300 by far. Wanted so badly, on what is such a nice mold---until they used a DIFFERENT wing mold and the wrong engines. (Wow, they sculpted an all-new wing, just to be wrong--that's notable). And then messed up on the windows, like they do on half their Airbuses.

Really? We released one (1) fantasy model in all of 2003 - the PSA pink MD-80. In regards to retro, we released the PSA MD-80s across three sets, but we released far more current schemes: Alaska MD-80s, Saudi MD-11 and MD-11F.

I'll admit, 2003 was a lackluster year for Jet-X, but unfortunately was beyond our control (we don't control the factories). Here's hoping 2004 is far better.

Small manufacturing runs which results in few examples actually making it up here. So by the time we realize our dealers won't be getting enough to satisfy the demand they are all sold out down there.
Enter, Ebay and outrageous prices, shipping fees, creditcard gouging on the exchange, handling fees to collect the GST.... or another pissed off, frusrated collector sitting back and listening to the lucky ones go on and on about their copy(s).
The good thing is the money I'm saving.

Biggest disappointment for me is discovering 1/400 airliner collecting, getting hooked, then finding out there is one freaking retailer in Houston (that I'm aware of and/or willing to drive to). On top of that, the solo retailer focuses on trains and r/c, giving airliners three small shelves.

Ozz, I share your frustration, as I myself have missed out on a few releases. But I bet you're talking about AC and BB models, right? If you are, Zareh Amadouny stocks most (if not all) AC and BB models regularly. He may not have older releases, but he gets a regular batch of the newer ones. You can contact him via his email address: ve2nw@videotron.ca

Dragon's Connie...hands down. I wait and wait and wait for propliners, and then along comes something as bad as that! But 2004 already bodes well, as I just finished ordering AC's Bonanza (and Trans Texas) DC-3's and F-27's! YES!!!!

By the way, now that I've got four Bonanzas on the way, I might as well complete the fleet. Didn't AC release a Bonanza DC-9 and/or BAC-111? Anybody know who might still have it/them?

AeroClassics released both the Allegheny & US Air triple red schemes last year on the BAC-111. US Air had both the white and silver body versions.

Nappinduke, try Jetcollector.com for those Bonanza DC-9's; they recently bought up all remaining BZ DC-9 stock.

Thanks much, Mr. Klein, for both the heads up re Jetcollector, and for producing your props---past, present and forthcoming. I do wish, however, that you hadn't reminded me that I missed-out on the Allegheny BAC-111. That thought produces a very visceral response in me. You can easily redeem yourself by producing an Allegheny CV-580. THANKS!

Those were the QUADRUPLE-red schemes! Earlier variant of the famous triple-red. Quad-red is correct for Allegheny, but not USAir. The silver and white USAir 1-11's are technically fantasy releases, for they did not carry quad-red, only triple-red. Only white Allegheny 1-11's ever wore quad-red. Just take a quick look at the model--there's FOUR shades of red. It's obviously not triple-red.

Close, but not quite. It'd be like releasing a UAL *high-stripe* o/c 752---same scheme, but noticeably wrong variation thereof.

So we're still at 0 triple-red USAir models. We have 2 fantasy quad-red ones though. But all the 1-11's wore triple-red, as did the DC-9/727/737/MD-80/Fokker fleet. Quad-red is exclusive to Allegheny.

My biggest disappointment (that I bought) was the SMAC Delta 737. The "widget" on the nose section was poorly aligned, ruining the model for me.
Biggest disappointment as far as NOT being released is a "widget" 757. I plan on buying several when and if they ever get released.

The biggest disappointments in 1/400 to me...

1. Still no L-1011 from Jet-X although announced in 2001 already. I am still waiting for twin packs of the "Lockheed/Eastern L-1011 Demonstrator (Court / BEA)" as well as the "Lockheed L-1011 Prototype" (Original colours / 'Advanced TriStar' colours).

2. Still no next-generation L-1011 mould from GeminiJets. Obviously, the rumours weren't serious.

3. Still no Convair 990s from AeroClassics, although I am quite confident that Andrew will release it sooner or later... well, the sooner, the better.

Actually Leitender, Andrew is set to release his first 990 in January. It's a Nordair. As for Tristars, let's hope that once Gemini re-tools their mould, we'll see a Landor and red tail released.

The American Airlines A300 made by DW. I was looking foward to this model, but then seeing the photos of it and how much they messed it up was very disappointing. And what's even more disappointing is that DW has a very good A300 mould but STILL messed this one up.

Easy, its not a model.

Its the small release runs and the multi packs that are making collecting harder and harder and less enjoyable.

Angry Biggest Disappointment 2003

I agree the DW West Jet 737-2 was a purchase I wish I hadn't made.

We really do need Aeroclassics or SMA to put out one with a much better mould!!

Thanks to Sergei (FlyFrontier) and myself for the intense pressure that we applied to Jet-X, those, MD-80s Alaska models (twin pack) were finally released.

Please word your reply with the complete facts.

Thank you very much
