Default Request for the Tu-134 in 1/400 Scale

Dear friends:

I would like to make a proposal: could any manufacturer begin the production of the Tupolev Tu-134 in 1/400 scale? I think there is a large market there, because the collectors that, as in my case, love the old Komintern liveries, we don't have many times more options than the Tu-145. With the little sister we could have more variety.

You can see that the idea has worked well for Herpa 1/500, I think we are a lot of more people in the 1/400 world.

Thanks in advance for your attention,

Felix Fernandez de Castro (Oviedo, Spain)

I support this request ! The 1/400 community has already asked for a Tu-134 in the past, why 1/200 and 1/500 have theirs, and not us ?

You may also ask ... why no Ty-114 or, the military varient, the Ty-95? As with the Ty-134, it has been done in other scales, but not 1/400.

It would be nice, indeed. My only point here is that the Crusty had more than 50 operators from four continents, and I only can found four or five for the Cleat. I imagine that the first one is more interesting than the second for the investor in a new mould, but I agree with you, the T-114 is a very great plane, maybe more significant for the history of aviation than the 134.

Phoenix have the mould in 1:200 and could downsize it. None of the manufacturers are showing any signs of innovation around mould types especially Phoenix who are very conservative in this area. Even if they did do it they'd only release 1-2 models a year on it like they have with the TU-154.

Aeroclassics is the only hope for older types being released in any numbers but they have shown a complete disinterest in Soviet era aircraft in recent years.

I find it odd that every plane can't be found in 1/400.
If I was a manufacturer that's where I would focus.
I love my small 1/200 military jets collection but will never collect 1/200 airliners; they're just too big.

1/400 definitely seems to be the poor relation when it comes to diversity of aircraft types modeled. Particularly with regards to Soviet types. (Although Ilyushin seems to be doing okay.)
I'd very much like to see a 1/400 Ty-134 in both glazed and solid nosed forms.
Then there's the Ty-114, Ty-124, Ty-104, An-12, An-24, An-26, Yak-40 etc...

It's not that bad : only a few US post-WWII propliners are missing, every Airbus and almost every British jetliners are available, we even got the Caravelle (III and VI), Canadian RJs and Japanese YS-11.
Now Soviet airliners are definitely not well cared for, but so are French and British propliners, along with the "minor" nations (German VFW 614 or Czech Let 410, for example). Who will dare ?...

Not sure if my list is still up to date, but compiled these post WW2 aircraft missing in 1:400 scale. It only concerns commercial passenger and cargo aircraft i.e. no general aviation or military. It's a few years old so updates / additions are always welcome.

I quite agree and have campaigned for years for a Tu-104, Tu-114, Tu-134 and An-12 in 1/400, but it falls on deaf ears. As far as manufacturers are concerned, it's all about profit and how many of each they can sell. Whilst they can flood the market with Airbuses that clearly sell well to the younger collectors and obscure Chinese airlines that there is clearly a market for (mainly in China!), it seems any retro classics get forgotten. The Tu-134 is clearly an untapped money spinner that Phoenix have not got to grips with, when it comes to downsizing their 1/200 mould. Having said that, there are several unique 1/200 moulds out there that could easily be downsized for little extra cost, such as the Canadair CL-44, Bristol 170 etc., but there is no passion or incentive behind the mould owners to do so.

If one is ever to be made, then I would want a copy of C9-CAA.

Quite a comprehensive list. I already spotted a few missing airliners : Martin 2-0-2, Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer, Aérospatiale Corvette, Handley-Page Halton, Latécoère 631, and probably some others. I would also add the Convairs 240 and 340 as current depictions are not accurate.

I can see you're optimistic enough to include the DC-5 and HD-34 ! Not worse than my own additions though...

Thanks for the updates, the new list is below.

Just a quick recap of the limitations of the list:

- Commercial Service (passenger, freighter)
- Military use not included
- Must have been in operational service post 1945
- Aircraft in development not yet delivered to customers not included

Just noticed that Dragon actually did make a short nose L-1049 - they just didn't use it much. See here:

Probably because sales haven't been worth a hill of beans!!

My goal for this year is to end die-cast collecting and enjoy the 1:400 scale models bought over the past 10 years. The "Asian Shift" that has taken place, combined with the same flag carriers being released over- and over again have rather taken the fun out of it. Just can't get very excited about for example yet another China Eastern Airbus and am rarely buying new releases these days. I managed to get my holy grail last week (Drax Air Electra from Aeroclassics) and with that have completed all past models I ever wanted to own. It's been lots of fun and hopefully some nice releases will happen between now and December.

Which means we won't see a Tu-134 coming from AC. Ok. Our best hope is Herpa, I guess.

I can understand this. I still hope we'll see some on your list checked one day, so I'm not ready to give up yet.
BTW I forgot the Nord 262, still don't know how !

Herpa makes a really nice Tu-134A in 1:500 scale, I have a few of them and worthwhile collecting. It would be great though to see it scaled up to 1:400.

So you can 'cover your costs' by producing a handful of Handley Page Heralds, but you can't by producing a 1/400 Tu-134 mould and selling it in the colours of dozens of airlines?? Cummon - surely, you would soon cover your costs AND some?
