Exclamation SPOTTIN' @THE CHICKENPORT: BB Australian Airlines 767-300

On October 27, 2002, the reincarnation of Australian Airlines inaugurated 767-300 service from the Gold Coast city of Cairns to the Japanese cities of Nagoya and Osaka as the leisure travel arm of QANTAS. While the world at large might now Australian as a new airline, its history actually goes back to 1946 when the government of Australia established Trans-Australia Airines (TAA) with initial services between Melbourne and Sydney beginning in late 1946 with DC-3s.

More pictures of this release and the history of both the original Australian Airlines and its newest incarnation can be found at this thread on our forums at Airlinebuzz.com.

To be entirely accurate, Cairns isn't actually a "Gold Coast City". The town of Coolangatta (OOL) is known as the Gold Coast Airport and this is where Australian Airlines operate daily feeder flights to Cairns from (for connecting international passengers only). The area leading from the Tweed (border of NSW) right up past Surfers Paradise through to Bribie Island is classed as the Gold Coast. After that you reach the Sunshine Coast which streches right up to possibly Mackay. Cairns isn't on the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast. It's just on the East Coast.

Stunning release though Doc. Tell me, do you have the Gemini version too or have you seen the Gemini version in person?

How would you compare the two?

Thumbs up

Ya know? The more and more I see BB's version, the more I wished I could have gotten one. The lack of a local BB/AC dealer really hurts.

Oh well, atleast Gemini released one, albeit a "less-quality" version.

I know you use Threshold but surely AW have one. If not, they could get one from YVR I am sure.

I don't go to Aviation World all that often, but the last time I went there, they only had a couple of AC models and no BB or SMA's.

But hopefully, they'll start stocking up on all the AC/BB/SMA releases...

JP,

Thanks for posting this here too - excellent - although of course I've already read it all on airlinebuzz. I'm still wrestling with the idea that Australian is really the reincarnation of the old Australian - maybe, but in name only.

One thing BB400 most definitely got wrong was that they missed the last two letters of the registration VH-OGJ off of the top of the tail - the two letters should be there, in black. Why, I wonder did they miss that? Well, I can only conclude that Andrew K wasn't too keen on putting the letters "GJ" all over his new model release!

Hey Andy mate.

Not sure if you have heard about bmi Regional moving their maintenance facility up here to Aberdeen - I am sure you will have done.

Is this facility currently based at EMA?? How many jobs are being lost as a result of the move?
