Default Eastern Airlines

Rapping up the 20th display in my domestics is Eastern Airlines. The background isn't finished but you get the Miami drift. Eastern is the largest fleet in my inventory with 38 models.

Even for a defunct airline, Eastern seems to rate very high for most individuals with fleets and in overall sales.

These shots are most of my white fleet with no room for the silver ones. I like Gemini's terminal as it looks like a pseudo ATL terminal.

I love your little dioramas they have such a flavour of the airline and geographic locations they relate too. As it happens one of my most recent blog entries was on the New Mark scheme. I think it really suits the propliners:

Enter the New Mark: Eastern's Hockeystick - Yesterday's Airlines

Did you get the recent DC-7 release Steve?

You wrote an excellent account of the early New Mark years Richard. I did feel sorry for MacIntyre because Rickenbacker was in his way. But at least MacIntyre is credited for the development of the Shuttle and introduction of the 727. And I do agree with Jim's reply in your blog about the reintroduction of the bare metal fleet.

The only two propliners that interested me in the new mark were the Connie and Electra. Both made a real imprint on the burgeoning Shuttle. The only other propliner I got for Eastern was the rare DC-6 in the Golden Falcon scheme. These leased birds (1958-1962) were instrumental in filling two delivery gaps of the DC-7 and Electras. And their capacity was also needed when Eastern retired the early model Connies in 1961.

Steve: "The only two propliners that interested me in the new mark were the Connie and Electra".

The hockeystick livery seems perfect on the Electra, less so on the Connie. The straight cheatline on the Connie seems to work against the flowing, curved, dolphin-like fuselage, whereas the original TWA thin twin red striped cheatline followed and emphasized the natural lines of the fuselage.

Also, the Convair CV-440 always seemed sort of an 'Electra Jr.', and looks like a shortened L-188. To me, the white crowned hockeystick livery looks best on these two airplanes.

Awesome collection! If Eastern is a Defunct airline, why do I still see it on FR24, from MIA to HOG?

BTW, are the golfers gonna bash the plane into bits?

A new Eastern has emerged, but they currently only provide charter service.

I grew up in Florida and have a cousin who once worked for Eastern. I loved the airline.

Thanks for sharing photos of your amazing fleet!!

Forgot to mention... As a teenager, I life guarded at our community swimming pool in Kensington, Maryland. Two sisters, the prettiest of the lot, became stews on Eastern Airlines. Just another reason to hold EAL dear. Keep 'em flying, Doug

I totally agree Doug. Eastern should have taken cues from the Golden Falcon scheme which flowed beautifully along the Connie's curves. Just curve the hockey stick toward the front where it would meet the newly modified falcon logo. The hockey stick was right at home with the CV-440 and L-188 because of their substantial tails.

The new Eastern is smart for getting a big foot into Cuba. Granted, it will take some years for Cuba to rebuild its travel infrastructure but once Eastern is approved for FAA certification to commence scheduled operations between May and November of this year, they should be ready to serve the Caribbean and Latin America.

Eddie Rickenbacker thought that because dimples on a golf ball improve its aerodynamics during flight, Eddie in his own cheap way decided to pull a bunch of golfers from the course and whack balls at the Connie's lower fuselage.
