Question OT: Favorite destination.

I have plenty of favorite destinations NYC being #1 but Jackson Hole, WY and Idaho Falls, ID have to be among the best I have ever been in. I have plenty of family up in Idaho Falls so I usually take a flight from DFW to Jackson Hole since its alot closer to Idaho Falls than SLC is, so we tend to stay in Jackson Hole for a few days and I love that town its so original and stylish it is a must for anyone who wants to have the best snow sport adventure during the summer there are lots of things to do as well but winter is a better season up there, its a winter and summer destination for me, so I encourage you guys to visit Jackson Hole and my home away from home Idaho Falls.

AW, thanks for the recommendation. After I get my Ph.D. and do my postdoc, I'm looking to settle in an out-of the way place, and hopefully live out in the sticks, or semi-sticks so as to enjoy some cheap real estate prices and PEACE and QUIET. Also, I'm tired of California. I have a colleague who teaches in San Marcos TX, and lives 30 mins away near Wimberley in the heart of TX hill country. It's great! I hope to get a similar set up one day.

So, how are real estate prices in these two places? I know of some folks who moved from here to Idaho and got a huge house for very little. They are very pleased up there.

And please, no one give me crap about Californians moving into "your" state. For years and years, California has taken in lots and lots of people from all over the country. Every time they show the Rose Parade on TV, and it's 70 degrees with the sun shining on New Years day , they estimate that loads of people from all over the country decide to move here. It only stands to reason that migration will start to move in the opposite direction at some point, especially as CA has become so overpopulated and expensive!! Actually my family is originally from Montana (Ireland before that!).

Favorite big city site would have to be HONG KONG. Great place to see lots of things and eat some good food.

Favorite place to really have a great workout is YOSEMITE NP in Cali. There is no place like it the spring when the winter snow is melting and the water falls are at their best. Lots of hiking and just a great visual for the eyes.

But, if its just a place to get away and relax it would have to be northern Wisconsin. Having a family cottage on a lake really helps. Fishing and a few beers is always a great vacation.

All time favorite approach would have to be Kai-tak in Hong Kong. There was nothing like it anywhere. Being from Chicago I also say landing at ORD when you fly out over the lake and circle around and fly right over the loop. Its a great site to see from above.

SUPERB QUESTION!

When it comes to the approach, I would have to go for either SLC or LAS. The lights of the Strip on approach in the evening are just mindblowing but a daytime approach to SLC gives some views of some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.

As for things to do and, generally, favourite place to go; I would have to vote for Seattle. I just love the place and if I ever go to the States I try and make a point of heading to SEA, even if it's just for a couple of hours. I just love it.

PLUS we have a lot of DACers up there so it's nice to meet people!

I love the Pike's Place markets and seeing people throw the fish about. That's a great thing to see if anyone is in SEA on vacation!

Other than SEA, I have to go for BNE (Brisbane, Australia). Having lived there for a year, it's my real home-from-home. Some of my very best friends live there, I have a home there if I need it and the climate is just tremendous. I love the city, the suburbs and the entire state of Queensland :

PLUS you get to go to Steve Irwin's zoo just about a two hour drive north of the airport!!!!!!

Oh, sorry. My favourite approach is to Aberdeen (ABZ) as, having lived away from home for almost three years in total, I have come to really REALLY appreciate my parents, friends and other family.

As soon as I see the cricket pitch at the edge of the runway, I know that I am nearly home and that is just the BEST feeling in the world. Even if I have just been away for a day on business.

Sorry that was a little mushy but hey!

Ha! Interesting you mention that. My wife and I are going there in Sept. for a weeks vacation. We're staying in a ocean front room in the Islander on the Beach. I'm going to hit Tunnels, Poi Pu, Lydgate for snorkeling, and we will probably also take the a helicopter ride, and boat trip to fern grotto. Also, I'm going to the National Tropical Botanical Garden to collect a plant for my research. Do you have any other recommendations?

As for my favorite destinations:

ROME
Hong Kong
Kona
London
New Orleans

I'm also looking forward to my upcoming trip to Texas (Austin, San Marcos) for some Texas BBQ!!

The real estates are pretty cheap DEPENDING where you go. The odd thing about it is that my grandfather has his own real estate company in Idaho Falls and its the biggest there, its funny everywhere you go in Idaho Falls you see a sign stating Skidmore INC. He even build the Mall in Idaho Falls But after I get settled with a good job and if I could get transfer I want to live around that area Jackson Hole or Idaho Falls.

I would pick Seattle as my first choice. If I could get my wife to agree to it, we'd be on our way as soon as I could sell our house and pack my diecast collection.

Second choice would be London. A city that I was instantly comfortable with.

Third choice is Boston. Hey, I'm half Irish - how could I not like Boston?

Altough I agree with Vikings that Aruba is fantastic along with Curacao, my favorite destination besides the Big Apple has been Bimini and Cub Cay in the Bahamas. Ernest Hemingway's home in Bimini became the Complete Angler Hotel and the laid-back non-tourist Island with just under 1,200 residents is a great "R&R" location. Cub Cay is a private resort with some great fishing and scuba activities and a 10 minute boat ride from Bimini.

My future choice for a destination is and has been Hawaii.

To me Hawaii and Aruba and other islands ect do not impress me, I wouldnt want to live on a island that you cant really do any road trips and be that far away from any major cities. Jackson Hole or Idaho Falls would better suite my retirement needs.

I have seen this on a "Monty Python" special in which he travels pole to pole.

I have always wanted to fly to Antarctica on a DC-6 or some big old plane like that, just to say that I have been there. There is a local operation called the 109th ANG that has been flying Hercules there for several years now to support science projects and, in one widely-publicized case, to rescue a scientist who was suffering from a serious disease.

Hi Antony, yes I went down there on the BAS DHC Dash 7 and flew in a lot of DHC Twin Otter flights out of there while I was with BAS. Rothera base is awesome, landing on the ice is incredible too, there is a feeling of supreme peace and beauty to walk on the ice cap. Take care!

Each year in January and February Qantas operates scenic flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide to Antarctica. Its a 10,160km journey down to Antarctica from Sydney and once there the 747-400 descends to about 2,500ft doing figure 8's to allow viewing of the magnificent ice scape. This years flights will fly to the south magnetic pole, the French Base of Dumont d'Urville, then head east to Cape Hudson, tracking the northern coastline, flying over Commonwealth Bay, Mawson's Hut and the Mertz Glacier. The aircraft will then track inland over the Transantarctic Range, the magnificent mountains of Victoria Land to Cape Washington, just north of the Ross Ice Shelf and over the Admirality Islands, turning north, it will then fly along the huge coastline of the Ross Sea to Cape Adare, and then head home to Australia.

Its a great opportunity to visit a place so remote from the rest of the world.

Please tell me you are kidding, doesn't Seatle have the largest suicide rate in the world?
It rains there like 300 days a year! YUK!

AAMD11, you can do road trips in Aruba, the difference is that you do them in a boat over crystal clear waters.

You sound like a land lubber!
