I don't have any L-1011s yet, but I'll probably get this Pan Am or the DL widget.

Did Pan Am operate the L-1011 with billboard titles? a.net's search feature is currently screwed up and I don't see any photos of a PA L-1011 with billboard titles.

I dont think so, I think they got rid of them by the mid 80s, and just for the record:

Pan Am sold their pacific routes to United and UAL got the L-1011's along with the routes. Another great L-1011 would be the United Saul Bass scheme, along with BWIA and Royal Jordanian. Pan Am way to go GJ's!!!!!!

Pan Am , British and Delta the launch customers for the L-1011-500 are the only carriers I am interested although sight of the new colors Saudia is appealing. Forget the United saul bass, my most irritating flaw with the United is that they didn't paint the full size stylized U on the entire tail (which they could have done) but they opted for the dc-10 size stylized U..which to me was ugly and just as bad as the AA logo on the 737-200 (when AA bought aircal). Wow had lots to say in this thread. Pan Am globe looked fantastic on the L-1011-500 big bold and beautiful. Hey Crown Vic will we see inflight 200 release a Pan Am 747-100 with the larger title (similar to the Pan Am cargo release a few years ago but WITHOUT THE CARGO TITLE AND EVERYTHING ELSE THE SAME)

("This image or video has been moved or deleted .... photobucket")

Is it just me ?

Can someone repost them please ??

Still, they do not have a longbody L-1011 mould, therefore, you'll have to wait a few more years maybe.

Correct, my friend. It's dubbed L-1011-385-1 though - just to make the difference to the -500, named L-1011-385-3.

I have to admit that the numbering schema of the L-1011 has always baffled me.

Are you saying:
- that the -385-1 designates that this was the first version ?
- that the -500-3 designates that this was the third version ?

I forget what would be -###-2 ...

Help ?

Buddy

No, as far as I know the "-1" simply degisnates the longbody versions whereas the "-3" stands for the shortbody, i.e. the -500. The -1 also had extensions (-1-14, -1-15) specifying a higher fuel capacity.

EDIT:
You should keep in mind that "L-1011-385" was the manufacturer's designator, whereas "TriStar 1", "Tristar 200", "TriStar 500" etc. were a marketing designator. The "L-1011" became a very popular 'public (and marketing) desingator' in North America as well, but the rest of the world primarily refered to it as "TriStar".

So, any L-1011 was dubbed "L-1011-385-x" depending on what model you are talking about. The "TriStar 1" is "L-1011-385-1", the "TriStar 500" is "L-1011-385-3".

Thanks ... but I'm still confused. (Wikipedia doesn't seem to help)

So ... There were 3 basic versions of the L-1011 ?

#1 -1, -50, -100, -150 were the original version and upgrades
#2 -200 and an upgrade to 250
#3 -500

OK ... here is a Delta, United & PanAm model #
L-1011-385-3-500
This was a 3rd version then ?

What is this ? ... a first version ?
L-1011-385-1

What does the "-385" designate then ?
(How many cupholders ?)

The L-1011 is my favorite commercial aircraft ... but the numbering schema confuses the crap out of me.

Thanks !

No, no, Buddy.

There were only two manufacturer's basic designators:

1. L-1011-385-1 depicting the long body
2. L-1011-385-3 depicting the short body

The L-1011-385-2 never existed. Lockheed had a lot of plans for future models during the early stage of development and production but several plans did not materialize. Actually, as far as I recall, there was a heavier long-range L-1011-385-2 (or L-1011-2) planned but it was skipped. You know, Lockheed had to face the Rolls-Royce bankruptcy and, later, the "oil crisis" harmed the business as well.

Back to topic, all longbody versions - known as TriStar 1, 100, 200 etc. - were L-1011-385-1s, the shortbody TriStar 500 was the L-1011-385-3. Depending on tank capacity, the TriStar 100 and TriStar 200 were dubbed with L-1011-385-1-14 or L-1011-385-1-15 extensions.

Designators such as "L-1011-385-3-500" are an invalid mix of manufacturer and marketing designtors and are ALL WRONG. Several scale model manufacturer use to mix them up all the time... actually, this illustrates that they don't have a clue. They'd better use the easier marketing designators only.

Hope this help to clarify the desingators' chaos.

The L-1011-385-2 never existed. Lockheed had a lot of plans for future models during the early stage of development and production but several plans did not materialize. Yes .. it does very much.
It actually makes more sense ... many times I have looked carefully at various 1:400 L-1011s trying to distinguish types and all I could see were differences in "long" and "short". I am lucky enough to have both of the 1:200 Delta L-1011s (IF & GJ) and the difference between them is much easier to see in that scale.

I had also never considered when looking at models / books / etc that they could have the designators wrong themselves ... once again ... Assume = A$$ out of U & ME ... or in these cases ... confuse me !!

Thank you VERY much !
Now I feel certain I know a bit more about my favorite aircraft ... always a good thing !

Buddy

Thank you very much for taking the time & effort to explain.
I am humbled by your knowledge.

I hope nevertheless that we will see the L-1011 in EAL colors. I love their scheme.
