If you're starting off with a 747 and a 787, Gemini makes neither of those airframes.

You can't really compare the two because Hogan is plastic and Gemini is metal.

Gemini is fairly new in the 1:200 scale, but their models have been quite popular since the beginning of production. I have two models from Gemini in 1:200 and they are both great.
Here are some pics of my Gemini Air Canada A321:http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...nada-a321.html

I also have two Hogan models. Hogan doesn't have as much detail as Gemini, but they still have some great looking models.
You can find some pics of my Hogan Air Canada on this thread
http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...-300-pics.html

Manufacturers:

Plastic:
Hogan
Skymarks

Metal:
Gemini200
Phoenix200
Inflight200 (mostly retro planes and quite expensive, but worth the price)

Here are some inflight200 pics:
http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...flight200.html
http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...200-model.html

I'm also fairly new to 1:200 so I might not have covered all the manufcturers, but these are the most popular ones in my opinion

Welcome on board rookie.
I think for beginning your collection you can buy from Hogan Wings; their models are quite good value but it depends on your budget.

hey sautya i am also new to this scale i have only been collecting officially ince last year christmas. thats when i got my first 2 models. a herpa adac do328 and a hogan 737-300 air new zealand but i havent bought any more since this christmas. now i have two 757s one 777 one 747 one 767 one 787 and three 737s and finially an a319. all hogan. i love hogan because they are cheap and good quality i defenitly reccomend them if you have a low budget. oh one more thing, never never never never never never . never superglue your gears i did that with almost all of them and a little brother with anger issues and that loves to play with them broke about half of them and now i have half of my models without gears! good luck!

I have both, and they're very nice indeed... In fact my HE LH744 was one of my first models.

If I had to choose I'd go with the HE one, it has a little more detail and color, so it stands out better. But that would be only based on the fact that I like that livery better...

I suggest Herpa and Gemini Jets for 1:200 .

I have few Herpa models ( Iran air 747-200 , Air New Zealand A320 Lord of the ring and Herpa premium 737-300 Continental ) They are very nice and detailed models. They worth the price.

Hogan is something I wont choose for myself so I don't suggest it to anyone. I normally prefer to save up and buy something I enjoy for long time and don't regret why I didnt save up for something good.

I haven't had any Gemini 200 but they seem quite good models , Although not much of variety for Gemini Jets 200.

Inflight 200 models are ok . Specially I like their 747s.

Good luck and enjoy collecting 1:200 models

If you strictly into 1:200 then for the following a/c I recommend:

747: Hogan and Skymarks/Risesoon
787: Phoenix and Hogan
777: Hogan and Skymarks/Risesoon
A330/A340: Hogan

For the smaller a/c i.e. A318/319/320/321 and 737's there is Gemini and Hogan.

Herpa while using the Hogan moulds, makes some interesting subjects but is alot more expensive i.e. the Hogan Qantas A380 is available for less than $40 whereas the Herpa version is close to $100 and they're basically one and the same thing.

As for retailers, I've bought alot of my stuff from JPF and Diecast Airplane but I'm getting alot of models from Jetway Models, Gemini Jets, Dragon Wings, AeroClassics, Herpa Wings, Starjets, Jet-X as the prices are more than reasonable and the service is great.

In which ways do you think Herpa is better than Hogan?

Why are the Herpa models more expensive? Are they metal?

The name costs, not the model. But some of them are die-cast ( ATR 72/42, Super Connie, 727, CV 440 etc.)

First thing that comes to mind is the fact that HE comes assembled and the packing is much better... Of course, that doesn't justify doubling the price... Detail is about 20% better and lets say the rest is just brand name cost.

The Herpas definitely have more details... The CX fleet, Etihad, Canadian Goose B744, Korean B772 and the most recent Lufthansa A330-Minden are in a class of their own.

Next down the line are the Hogans that would appear to have lesser details, but other things like rotating fan blades, which are only now starting to appear on Skymarks

The major portion of my collection is Skymarks, and these are not too bad. I love their 744s and A380 over Hogan anyday! Though the Hogan models do have more details in more than one way or another, when compared to Skymarks.

Herpa Premiums are totally out of my range, and I don't ever see myself getting any of them (for now)
