As i've mentioned in other threads today, I was at ARD yesterday. was there for a good hour looking at models and talking about the sorry state of our beloved country, England.
Whilst trying to decide what to spend my overtime money on, I saw the Herpa range of 200's, more importantly to me, the A380. Paul kindly pointed me to one which was on display, but semi hidden away. Having examined the model I have to say I wasn't that impress, mainly with the undercarriage. I thought to myself, well it's not that bad, I guess it must be considerably cheaper than the diecasts....but then I saw the price tag, £49.99. What!?!?! I'm thinking to myself, how is this possible. I dread to think how much profit Herpa make from each model. Yes, I understand there set-up costs per mould are in their thousands, but as far as I am concerned £49.99 for the product seemed far too much. I'm not sure if its because I've been used to the good ole diecast or what, but I struggle to put diecast 1:200 and plastic 1:200's in the same league. Yes, they are more affordable than the IF200's, but they are also more expensive than Gemini's current range of 200's, which looks promising apart from their QC issues (covered in other threads). I really want to give the Herpa models more of a chance. I'm sure plastic has its positives, in fact I'm sure of it. However, the question I put to everyone is, do you not think they are a little overpriced? |

Which airline(s) are you considering for the A380?

I assume you're referring to the Herpa QF A380 or the China Eastern A380? Yes they are grossly overpriced. The same QF A380 can be purchased made by Hogan which is the same mould albeit unassembled and in different packaging and for roughly half the price.
Herpa is basically a designer label in 1:200 scale, similar to IF200. All their plastic 1:200's are manufactured by Hogan and assembled and packaged by Hogan and stamped and sold as Herpa. Its not often you're fortunate enough to find the same model manufactured by both Hogan and Herpa, the QF A380 and Alaska 737-900 being exceptions. One thing I'm at least releaved about is that to date, I have yet to see or hear of any Herpa model being assembled incorrectly. The landing gears, wings and horizontal stabs are all assembled perfectly and fitted perfectly. I dread the day I see a Herpa 1:200 with incorrectly installed landing gears or other assembly flaws.

The Qantas and Singapore A380 are good choices in my opinion.
