Door outlines should be black against white fuselage and white against blue stripe. They look gray to me. Anyone else see gray? If so, what a shame as there are so many photos to choose from where black door outlines are clearly indicated...
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0585658/L/ They did a great job with the Pan American 727-100, though -- the livery is spot on. |

Yesterday I went to a local retailer to get a peek at these two models. I think the AA is good, but the UA has some errors that led me to pass on it altogether.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, the door outlines on the UAL 727 are all gray as opposed to black on white fuselage/white on the blue stripe. Also, the white area around the gold pinstripe where it meets the fuselage is a bit sloppy -- like it is a decal rather that paint. The inspar area of the horizontal stabilizer is not gray -- rather, the entire stab is bare metal. Also, as evident from photos, the rudder, which should be bare metal -- is entirely gray, and I have yet to see a UA 727-100 pic from the late 60s which confirms this was ever a trait of this scheme. As for the AA plane, it is much better. I am a veteran flight attendant of 20 years with AA, and early on in my career, I spent quite a bit of time in these planes and am quite familiar with the detailing. It represents a late 80s version up until the plane was withdrawn from the fleet in 1995 or 1996 (can't remember), as the two left windows just ahead of the wing are not blocked out. Up until about 1988, there was a small aux galley in that location (hence the window blockouts) and later this was removed and replaced with a row of YC pax seats. The wing detailing is unfortunately a bit off. All the AA -023s and early non-advanced -223s had a corroguard inspar on the wing and bare metal flap/aileron areas. On this model, inspar is correct dark gray/corroguard, but the flap area aft of inspar is are gray with bare ailerons. I don't recall any AA 727s (and I was on a lot of them over the years) that had gray flaps but with bare ailerons as illustrated on this model. The advanced -223 and -227s we got from Boeing around the BN bankruptcy had gray flaps, but also gray ailerons. Anyway, the AA 727 is quite nice, except for the light gray flaps. Everything else jives, especially the detail of gray on the tail/engine inlet. I think I'll get it anyway for nostalgic reasons -- even though we all hated to work that plane because there was only one galley for all those FC and YC pax. I remember getting on them and noticing that the dates of construction of many were 1 to 2 years before I was born! Alex Last edited by panam707; 03-25-2006 at 02:57 PM. |

I belive the door outline is not black, but it is white on the blue and blue on the white!
But that alone is not a dela breaker.

Looks black to me. I beleive they changed to blue when the United font went to Bookman italic around 1970.

It's not that it's a bad model, but for some reason, the size of these models and their added expense lead me to be a little more discriminating than in 1:400 scale where I am willing to be more forgiving of errors...
I have to limit my 1:200 collection to 1-2 examples of each 727, 737, DC9, DC8, 747, DC10 and L1011 that get made sheerly because of the space limitations in my home, and as much as I like the UA 727 1960s scheme/aircraft combination, I had to pass. I have the Phoenix Pan American 727-100 and am very pleased with it. Looks great next to the 747 rollout. I have seen the TWA 727-100 up close and it looks really nice as well, but I 'm not so fond of that scheme so I passed on it as well. I think this is a fine mold, and there are many fun 1965-1975 possibilities: 1. PSA pink scheme 2. Frontier bow and arrow 3. National Sun King early with bare metal belly 4. Eastern Hockey Stick white with bare rudder 5. Varig 6. Braniff Girards (solid pastels) 7. TWA Rocket Stripe 8. Northwest Orient 1970s 9. Northeast Yellowbird 10. Piedmont |

A National SunKing either in the 1969 or 1971 scheme is fine. The 1969 scheme had all gray nosecone while the 1971 had a cream/tan nosecone with the Fly Me Girls names behind doors 1L and 1R.

I really hope to get all of the Phoenix 72's but I must say a Delta Widget would look sharp.

I recently picked up the Pan Am 727 and in all likely hood will probably pick up maybe a couple more PA's for my collection. I also have the Western Models version of 727-200 billboard but I'am limiting that to only 1 due to cost. Its only 25.00 or so short of what an Inflight 747 cost and given that the new PA 747 delivery scheme will be out in May (according to Infllight) I'd rather reserve the funds for that purchase.
However if a PSA 727-100 shows up....well thats a no brainer I'll have to purchase one and also the Piedmont. My 1/200th scale collection is being built slowly but surely and only for need to have models, including the ones that were damaged when they fell on the floor during house re-modeling a couple of weeks ago. take care everyone......winged racer |

The Boeing 727 is definately a very nice plane.
Great profile. The American One is in my opinion better looking than the United. Cheers

The American 727 and the TWA models are the best looking so far, they really have good profile characteristics I agree .
![]() Want PSA black titles triple band red/orange and United Saul Bass triple cheatline and small titles. Also Eastern Whisperjet and National Sun King with chrome bellies. |
