Question

BTW, does anybody have an idea how much these models originally cost when they first came out in the 90s???

Original price was DEM 478,80 - that is about EUR 244,80.
I hope that your model is in perfect white condition. There is a 40:60 chance on eBay for a perfect 747.

Default typical flaws of used 747-premiums

...it is quite difficult to get a perfect LH-Premium 747 for a reasonable price. You should check your model for the following flaws:

- broken/missing antennae (especially the one on the top)
- broken/missing edges of the vertical stabilizers
- missing landing lights (in the wings)
- yellowing (compared to a white sheet of paper

I got myself one at ebay with broken stabilizers a few weeks ago for about 30,- € and replaced the stabilizers with those of another model I got two years ago (45,- € with a missing engine).
Btw - does anyone here need some spare-parts?

Does not really matter that much. It is not a bargain, but it is a very good price for what you are getting, yellowed or not. Missing pieces would be a bit of a problem IMO, but otherwise, a Modell Edition is worth having.

You will know exactly what I mean when you see the model with your own eyes and touch it with your own hands.

The Herpa Premiums out today cannot compare to the original Lufthansa Modell Edition...but the risk of yellowing or small dents is there. IT is certainly worth the pennies if you compare it to a regular Herpa.

Congratulations and tell us about the model when you get it.

Hey guys, i also want to know. I know that exposure to too much sunlight can make plastic turn yellow or fade. But if the item is in the box and never been exposed is there also a possibility that that the plastic will turn yellow from all these years in storage???

Yes too much UV from sunlight will cause most plastics to yellow or discolour, However many new white plastic models are now painted white - vide the Hogan A380. So this problem will lessen. Remember that plastic dislikes excessive heat as well!

As for the DLH Modell Edition a/c, it's a case of pot luck if the models have been stored in their packaging. If they are still white they will probably remain so. If yellowed, this was caused in a group of models due to a faulty batch of foam used with some of these models which acted on the plastic (ABS) causing premature yellowing. I can give some reassurances in that my Modell Edition 747's (Berlin, B-W and Bonn) are still as made and pristine in their packing.

The later Premium Herpa 747 a/c starting with Expo 2000 and ANZ have been made from PS which is less reactive than ABS. My Expo 2000s are perfect - I have 2, one boxed one on display. However my ANZ example is slightly fading but this has received some indirect sunlight.

Cheers!

Keeping the models stored probably will most likely hasten or cause the yellowing process on plastics. While normally it is customary to think of ultraviolet rays as a culprit (and of course UV will affect color changes in some polyvinyl compounds) another uncommon but just as potent problem is reaction between the protective foam and the model plastic. Both, but especially the foam or sponge, are comprised of volatile orgainc compounds (VOCs) which in a closed container with little or no air circulation will easily react with the models own plastic and start the discoloration process. I can guarantee there are going to be many collectors out there somewhere who are keeping these premium models closed up nice and tidy in their boxes and will be very dissappointed some day.

The best thing to do is to display these models out of their boxes in a cabinet that controls dust at a minimum, and away from direct sunlight. Also, avoid direct heat from display lamps. I have lamps inside my display cabinets but I never use them. Instead, I installed directional lightening overhead on the celing to illuminate the cabinets. This way, the cabinets never get warm, and there are times I will have the lights on for 12 hours at times.

But if you take anything away from this, get the model away from that foam. Trust me, you will be sorry if you don't.
