Default Gemini March Release Clue

From Facebook,

"Information regarding March's releases:

Dear Collectors,

Next week we will be announcing the March 2014 releases. Due to the factories being closed, and our ship leaving Hong Kong earlier this week there was limited timing to put together the March releases. There will be five 1/200 scale releases in March. We are looking forward to releasing new models in both scales starting in April. We have some very exciting new moulds on the verge of being released and a great addition for our 1/200 scale collectors. Later this week we will be posting clues for the new releases but I wanted to provided one for a teaser to hold you through the week. Thanks again to everyone for their support of GeminiJets, we couldn't do it without you!

Regards,
James

Clue:

This N. American airline flew 71 of these aircraft, retiring them in 2000, five years after this airline revealed the livery this model is painted in."

I have some ideas to this but nothing that's certain. Anyway I hope to see a 717 and MD-90 as new moulds.

It might be the TWA 727, they were retired in 2000 while United's were I think 2001 or 2002.

If there's nothing of a Western European Narrow Body nature I'm going to be very frustrated, my last model purchase was the BACF E190, unless you count the BA plane key ring that makes aircraft noises I got from T5 in November.

Taken from A.net post of 2001:

Airline to Retire Additional Eight Boeing 727-200s in 2001 and Seven in 2002
CHICAGO, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines (NYSE: UAL - news) announced today it will further accelerate the retirement of its Boeing 727-200 fleet, retiring 33 aircraft in 2001 and 32 aircraft in 2002, an increase to the previously announced schedule by eight aircraft this year and seven next year. The entire fleet of 75 aircraft will now be fully retired by March 2003 instead of the previously announced year-end 2003.

B727-200 Retirement Schedule - Past and Current

Aug '00 Dec '00 Jun '01
2001 4 25 33
2002 26 25 32
2003 45 25 10
Total: 75 75 75

``Given the soft economy and our anticipated higher costs for fuel and labor, we have decided to retire 33 of our B727-200s this year, ahead of the original schedule,'' said Jake Brace, Senior Vice President-Finance. ``With the early retirement of these aircraft, our capacity growth will slow, increasing only 1.9 percent in 2001 instead of the 2.2 percent previously announced.''

The B727-200 is a three-pilot, three-engine aircraft used in U.S. domestic service at United's hubs. The average age of the B727-200s in United's current fleet is 22 years. The company continues to modernize its fleet, having recently completed the retirement of its other remaining older aircraft -- B747-200s and DC-10s -- in the last six months.

At year-end 2001, United's operating fleet will consist of 611 aircraft with an average age of 9.6 years. At year-end 2002, United will have an operating fleet of 628 aircraft with an average age of 9.1 years. As a point of comparison, United's year-end 2000 operating fleet consisted of 604 aircraft with an average age of 10.1 years.

Could the clue be referring to an Air Canada DC-9-30 in the white fuselage, dark blue tail with red maple leaf 1990s colours. The date and number of frames sounds about right.

Your criteria will probably narrow as you become older, when you have to limit your spending as you have more important things to worry about.

I am not sure about your thoughts, guys.

TWA changed its corporate identity for the last time in 1997 (not in 1995), and they operated a slightly lower amount of 727-200s (or, on the other hand, a slightly higher amount if you include the -100s). At least, the 727s were retired by the year 2000.

United Airlines introduced its so-called "Battleship" livery earlier than stated - in 1993 - and it was actually the first livery painted on their all-new 777-200s (which was put in service in 1995, indeed). The 727 fleet was not retired before 2001, though.

Air Canada is another vague guess. The DC-9s were retired by 2002, the 727 was withdrawn from service ten years earlier. Their new logo was introduced in 1994.

Funny guessing game here. I got no clue, by the way.

A TWA 727-200 in the last scheme would be awesome! The dates mentioned are a match for this aircraft.

No.

Just to back this up I even dug up one of my old Airliner magazines from way back because I specifically remember a picture of the very first time I saw the new colors. It was a picture of N927L (a DC9) which was the first aircraft to receive the new paint.
Here is a picture of the Airliners magazine dated 1995 and a picture of TWA's first new colored airplane.
You guys obviously have a winner with the guess of a TWA 727 being the clue.

No they may like the airframe, flown on the plane, be from their country & the livery isn't a big enough negative to buy a model.

Thanks for digging that up! When I was making the clue above I was trying to find the first aircraft painted and couldn't find it.

I think these TWA colors are one of the best looking liveries to take the skies.

I have no doubt that Gemini will eventually release this and like all other AA models, it will be an instant sellout, that's for sure!

Yep, last revenue flight for a TWA 727-200 was September 30, 2000 operating STL-MSY-STL.

I like the final livery on the 747 and TriStar, the former of which I wish we would see in 200 scale, but I have never cared for it on narrow-body aircraft.

I was rather hoping that, if the TWA B722 guesses are correct, it would be the twin-stripes bold titles livery. Guess I'll be keeping my IF200 version a while longer. lol.

I put in the request with BBOX for it to be made and they were going to add it to the list of models to make but we will see if that ever happens. Fingers crossed though!

Two new Philippine Airlines coming up in 1/200

Got heads up that there will be 2 new PAL birds to be announced! From Gemini Jets: a 1/200 B777-300ER and from Inflight 200: ANOTHER B747-400 "70th Asia's First Shining Through" as seen in the photo! The B744 will be limited to 100pcs. Exciting news!

So DJmotwister is mistaken or has been provided mis-information?

I am confused?? T7

Foot in my mouth! I was thinking of Pakistan. No PAL models in March.

It happens. Based on your reply = PAL T7 is not touching down in March, but rather April or May (spring). Cool, I can give the wallet a break. Cheers! T7

I'll take the 747, can we see a 763 as well in the final colour scheme?

I was rather hoping that, if the TWA B722 guesses are correct, it would be the twin-stripes bold titles livery. Guess I'll be keeping my IF200 version a while longer. lol.
Indeed...The Final TWA scheme was a lovely livery...

I am on the lookout for the Inflight200 L1011 in TWA final scheme but they are very hard to come by...

Its a beauty and hope to add it too my collection soon!!

Here is a pic of it taken from a google search...
