Default New Western C-46

Well, scratch one off my list. Just got a note from ezToys announcing the release of a new mold Western Model C-46 in Nordair livery. Projected release date is 18 January. Can Braniff, Delta, Reeves, Flying Tiger, Buffalo, etc. be far behind. Two additional WM Nordair L1049's are also listed.
So........YAHOO !!!

I'd go for the Reeve, but the one I would really like to see happen is Everts Air Cargo

I do not remember Western previously producing a C-46 but I could be wrong. There are a plethora of airlines that could be represented. Here is an artist's rendering of a CW 20 in Eastern markings. Sadly, Eastern did not use them.

I'm not too familiar with Western Models previous life, but, for what it's worth, the message I received stated that this model would be a new mold. New/old as long as it looks like a C-46 I'll be happy.

Western previously did two -- Lufthansa and Pan Am. They have a section on their current website which is a database of their past efforts. It can be found here:

--> http://www.westernmodels.net/database.php

Please note . . . it is a bit dodgy in operation, and only a few photos are available. Not too well thought out, I'm afraid. At least it serves as a 'listing'.

Have never seen an old WM Pan Am C-46 but there are two versions of the Lufthansa one. Both are of N9891Z leased from Capitol, one has a silver top and the other a white cabin roof. This Commando is still flying with Buffalo Airways!!!

At the time I tried to order the Pan Am cargo C-46 from Western but it was never delivered.
I believe the Lufthansa C-46 was Western's last release before they left England to wander in the wilderness until they reappeared as they are today, a company making very nice models but with no apparent marketing skills.

I hadn't realised that PanAm or PAA ever operated the C-46. Pretty sure though that a Seaboard World has appeared somewhere down the line.

Neither have I, but WMs database of previous models lists it. Whether it was made or not, may remain a mystery.

Lovely shot of your Lufthansa one!

Nordair doesn't exactly light my fire either Rui but something cool will come along. Last night I saw a pic of an Alaska Airlines C-46 - I could live with that!

Yeah, I have to agree about Nordair.

Now CPA used 8 of them in the 50's for running supplies up to build the DEW line. I always thought they looked pretty cool with the bare metal between the lightning bolt cheatlines on the fuselage.

Yes! I forgot about Canadian Pacific - that would work too!

I'm impressed with the shape of that bizarre nose - from the one angle it appears to be quite good (reserving judgement for other angles). Nacelles look good too - and are those props metal? Might just be really good silver paint on plastic.

Given how all these manufacturers LOVE to mess up those CPA 50s cheatlines and various other livery markings, I'm hoping they do forget about it.

So am I. The mould looks really good, as does the finish. Impressive to say the least. Even if the props are plastic, they sure look the part!

Word of warning......he/she who hesitates........just tried to pre-order one of these and they were already gone! Not sure if there will be any more and haven't seen any other sources thus far. Hope this is only a temporary shortfall and not WMs long-term plan to limit numbers to the point that the models are that difficult to obtain. Sure seems as though that would be counter-productive when there is enthusiasm for the product. The hunt begins...........

Great for 1/200 collectors Andrew, but when are you going to downsize all these Western moulds for us 1/400 collectors? Surely a simple CAD job?
Would love a 1/400 Lufthansa and Capitol C-46, both Heathrow regulars in the '60s.

Hello Andrew.

Any chance to get from our usual retailers replacement parts for your beautiful Connies, the nose landing gear is a pure gem but it is so fragile ...

Thanking you in advance.

Absolutely no problem with Nordair, it's just not my bag. Gotta stick to my collecting theme... just as soon as I come up with one

Ooo I like all the polished surfaces! This mould is going to be fun

Absolutely Jean Pierre! I would imagine there are quite a few Connies and Starliners out there that could be rendered new again with a replacement nose strut.

But not listed (yet?) at Jetcollector or ARD...my usual ports of call.

Great to see a new prop job roll off the production line. The finishing always looks so exemplary on the Western's line. I'd dearly love one of these at some point.

So many exciting liveries !
To satisfy each of us, please, no limited edition.

My pleasure to show you my first WM C46 that landed safely yesterday (..before snowfall ! ).

It is correct in dimensions, tempo markings seems to be correct ; tempo marking is used to figure antennas (pity for VHF/VOR antennas !

Engine nacelles shape is correct (...plastic!), propeller is nice (plastic too!), but the wheel is metal, very well made, such as the beautiful inside of the wheel covers.

The brand new box is efficient ( Herpa, GJ200 style), but NO more "CA" registation (at the contrary of the new Nordair L1049).

But dark shadow in this idyllic picture :
- severe marks of metalic brush of right fuselage, and shining unfinished on the right wing.
- one gear not glued (attn Jean Pierre, gear legs are very thin, and undoubly weak...)

However, a very beautiful new model, and many liveries to come! !

Lovely shot of your Lufthansa one!
Thanks Upkeep. Here's another pic of the old model from other side...

There were several planned early Western Models that never materialised.

I believe there was the Pan Am C-46 plus a Seaboard & Western C-46 and a USAF C-46 in their Classic Bombers & Utility range that were mentioned.

Martin of Small World has recently done a Seaboard, the Lufthansa and the Transair Sweden as per crownvic.

Thanks for the nice photos DLSAN can see how the new one compares to the old.

Thank you DLSAN for your comments on this very nice model.
Not sure that tampoo marking is the best solution to reproduce antennae ...
It has been a long time since we didn't have a new model and this one is particularly interesting.

And internal package seems to be much improved. Seems like no more returned WM items - good news!
