Re: Model shops in washington DC and manhattan NY
Avoid the red caboose on 45th street. I went about seven weeks ago and they only had a few 1:200 models and most were damaged since they are all on display. I asked if anything new was coming in and the guy replied a few weeks. A few weeks ago I returned and nothing new had arrived and he said eventually he will place an order. Rude guy I must say!

I never understand these requests for model shops in various cities. All the variety and best prices are online, so find your best deal from the multitude that are out there. By their very nature, a bricks-and-mortar store will charge more.

Re: Model shops in washington DC and manhattan NY
If there is a retailer in DC, northern VA or MD that has a wide variety of 1:200 models, I haven't found it. I shop online and do so happily given the good prices and selection. But from time to time I do envy those who can pop into "brick and mortar" model stores to see the goods before buying.

What's great about the shop is that it's easier to find a cat poo than a new model. He keeps the pet dander covered 1/400's in a back breaking display case you have to literally get on your knees and twist your entire body to look into.
His 1/200's are so ridiculously overpriced; when he has them, that I just snipe at Ebay or order online.
I rarely walk in there unless meeting friends for lunch in the area. It's hot, stinky, and more a storage space of a hoarder than a retail business.

Re: Model shops in washington DC and manhattan NY
I has recently in Both Manhattan and Washington. Red Caboose has nothing of interest, I bought a diecast Ford Mustang in 1:18 scale. I wouldn't be in any hurry to go back to Red Caboose. In Washington I bought a 1:200 Skymarks B777 from the Smithsonian ?Air and Space museum.
Driving out of New York I went to The Airplane Shop in Fairfield New Jersey. This was a well stocked store with plenty of models in all scales. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Still you can't go past online stores for range and price.

I've been to the Red Caboose several times. They used to have a decent selection of GJ 200, but recently it's been lacking...As for the owner he's your typical old school New York shopkeeper. He's a dying breed. Very sarcastic, jaded, and up front. I never had a difficult time with him. Just don't ask stupid questions. Yes, there is such a thing! At least you know where you stand when you talk to him vs West Coast where they laugh at you behind your back. Either way you want it. Just my 2 cents. I probably just offended half of this board, but I'm an East coaster too!

Has anyone here bought from Hangar 11 hobbies before? Their prices are a bit lower than your normal online retailers.

Sometimes having the chance to touch the models and look at them closely makes the extra price worth it!
N708DN, if you're in town with a vehicle, definitely take a drive into Jersey to the Airplane Shop. It's not that far. Check out this thread... http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...sey-visit.html

It is also the souvenir aspect with the added bonus of an 'adventure', so a bricks-and-mortar store is something to hunt out.
