This was the loudest piston engined aircraft in which I have ever flown. I cannot even imagine how loud it must have been inside with those jato packs roaring!

I could be mistaken, but it appears to me to be a C 82 "Packet". Notice the three blade props, and the more narrow fuselage.

Nah, not a Packet, look closely n u will c the 4 bladers. I wonder if they did JATO take-offs with the old C-82.

My eyes are getting old, too much jet exhaust blown in them over the years.

Was that from the Steward-Davis jet pack then??

Given the overseas sales of the $1.19 I am truly sad not to see a model yet in 1/400. Tops for me would be Canadian, Norwegian, Italian, Belgian plus obviously USAFE.

With no 1/400 model, some of us have to make do with building plastic kits, which is an excellent opportunity to post this shot of a 1/72nd C-119F I built as the USAF Thunderbirds support aircraft.

It would sure bring back a flood of memories of when I was an 18 year old AFROTC cadet, hanging on for dear life as it chugged along through the clouds of southern Ohio...

I got my rides in a T-33, C-12, C-130, C-141, KC-135A and -E models, and one UH-1. I would have traded any of those, except the T-33, for a ride in the Boxcar!

Yes indeed, I'm a member of the IPMS Aerobatic Teams Special Interest Group and that F-5 is in the colours of the Philippine AF "Blue Diamonds" team. Currently building team support aircraft and am just finishing off a "Blue Angels" C-54.

Last spring a C-119 arrived in Niagara Falls on two flat bed trucks. The fusalage on one and the wings and tails on the other. It was pretty cool to watch it get put back together. Now it's a gate guard sitting along side a C-47 at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. I'll try to get some pics.

How appropriate that the USAF Thunderbirds is what you've chosen! No doubt that the Fairchild C-119 "Boxcar" was the inspiration for Gerry Anderson's Thunderbird 2.

Many years ago I was a crew member and mechanic in the USMC and while stationed in NAS SAND POINT SEATTLE we had 6 of the C-119F version with the over sized 'bubble radar nose' and we had IOU (integeral oil units) for our 4 bladed propellars as opposed to the Air Forces electric props. Flying in these airplanes was a lot of fun (I was only 18 at the time) and on one occasion returning from NAS San Diego the pilots left the cockpit one to sleep and the other to go to the bathroom and I was left alone for almost an hour flying that airplane, answering radio calls and in general thinking to myself that only in the Marines could an 18 year old high school drop out be able to do this.
