Tu160 in Venezuela
Hi guys,
a friend from Venezuela reported to me, that there are 2 russian TU160 at the moment in Venezuela.
Does anybody know why they are there ? My friend told me that there are some rumors, that Hugo Chavez wants to buy some new toys ...
Looking forward to hear from you !

What would Chavez do with these bombers? Not only are they enormously expensive, they're expensive to maintain, and unless Chavez plans to go to war with the US ( ), he'd be a boob to buy them.

Re: Tu160 in Venezuela
This is all part of a propaganda game with Putin and Russia. In addtion to the Ty-160's, the Russian Navy is sending ships to Venezuela. The Russian Navy and Air Force will conduct joint milatary exercises with the Venezuela armed forces. What a joke!
This is Putin's answer to the USA supporting Georgia and deploying a missile defense system in Poland. Chavez has stated he will get to fly in the Ty-160 (I hope the Russian flight crews have some of those air fresheners that hang from the rearview mirror for the Chavez stench). The second video below shows Putin not only flying in the Ty-160, but also flying it.

Those Rooskies have a hot looking plane in the Ty-160. A nice knock off of the B-1.

Putin really is wanting to resurrect the Soviet Union and the bad old days of the Cold War. Tupi, let me ask, since you seem to know a lot about what goes on in Russia, what do the average people think about the end of the Soviet Union? And is Gorbachev considered a hero or a chump?

The average Russian is not very political. They are more concern about having enough money to eat, buy vodka and pay for living expenses. Most will till you in private they think their government is corrupt, both in the communist days and now. They think most businesses are controlled by the Russian mafia. Because they can't do anything about it, they ignore it. There is a minority of Russians that still long for the old Soviet days, because they thought things were better then. The Russians I know hated the soviet days, but admit things are not much better today. If you read Russian history, they have a long history of government corruption even in the days of the Tsars.
Most Russians do have some national pride. And most Russians like Putin because they perceive him as a strong leader and he stabilized the economy after the Yelsin years. The Russian, as we do, take pride in their military and enjoy the parades and displays of its strength. Because Putin controls the media (as in the old Soviet days), the media puts a negative spin on the American government and the need for Russia to defend itself from us. This is just BS from Putin to distract the Russians from the problems with the economy and corruption.
So we are not really in a cold war again. All of what is now happening is to pump up Putin's ego and popularity.
