Default USAF Museum Dayton OH

I'll be at the USAF Museum in two hours. I'll be posting some cool pics over the next few days of the museum collection.

Tupi, you will be very pleased at all the neat stuff they have.
I personally like the Vietnam era section the best(B-52, Connie, Voodoo, F-100, F-86, LoadMaster, C-141, etc!).

Get some pics of the B-36 and B-58...I've never seen those two aircraft in person.

Deja vu! The F-86 is funny because those 'guns' are just stickers.
Tupi, did you see the little russian checkpoint while walking to the Vietnam era hanger?

I got pictures of checkpoint Charlie on my last visit to USAFM.
I do have a picture of the Berlin Wall and a Trabant from this visit.
This is my 3rd visit to the USAF Museum. Diffidently not my last!

Ah yes, I love this scene! I also like the one with the boy getting the glider out of the tree.

I've been going to the USAF Museum since I was a teenager, back when it was in a small building and all the aircraft except a very few, were outside and just parked in a haphazard fashion (this would be in the very late '50s and early '60s). It has been thrilling to see it grow over the years.

I had the joy of taking my pre-teenage son to his first visit. "You will see everything but the stealth fighter", I told him, since this was a very new plane at the time. We walked into the museum and there sat an F 117! Another visit with two friends from Delta had me leading them around talking about each aircraft and exhibit. Soon I noticed several others joinging us and listening to my explanations. The group seemed to grow a bit as we moved along. At the Martin B 26 ("Flack Bait") one of the membrers of our "group" recounted how he had flown them in Europe during WW II. "The damn thing tried to kill me every time I flew it," he said. "I know it wasn't easy to fly, but it brought you home, didn't it?" It had the lowest loss rate for all US bombers in WW II despite flying at medium altitude in a very hostile enviroment. When we finished the area, a lady came up to me and asked, "When is the next tour ready?"

I have been blessed living somewhat close to the museum. Louisville, Kentucky is about a 3-4 hour drive from Dayton, Ohio. Anyone from overseas who comes to the US for a vist, PLEASE do yourself a huge favor and schedule a trip to Dayton to visit the museum. Even if you think you are not all that interested in military subject, this military museum is an exception. You will need more than one day for your visit.

Tupi, I am so very glad you got to visit it.

Great feedback SDF! This museum is a national treasure. Aviation was born in Dayton OH by the Wright Brothers. The USAF advanced the aviation science for the world and the museum chronicles these achievements. This is truly a world-class museum anyone visiting this country should see.

Like you, even though I have only been to this museum 3 times over the last ten years, every time I go I see new and interesting additions to the collection (on this visit it was the Mig 29 and F-22). Can’t wait until the new 4th hanger is added.

A Trabi! I bought one in Germany back in '91, but my wife made me get rid of it. It was slow and smelly, but easy to drive and indestructable, my own little plastic car... I was going to ship it home, but they told me I'd have to take the motor out of it and ship it separately at my own expense, so I sold it to a German friend for about what I paid for it (350 marks).

Very neat, would love to take a ride in a Tribant.

Man wouldn't it be cool if that place was like Duxford and some of those planes actually flew? They would have one of the best airshows in the world.

Those are some awesome pics! It kills me that I've never been there, I really have to make an effort. Beautiful, beautiful aircraft, some of them can't be found anywhere else. BTW, the little tow-headed boy in some of your shots, that your son? Kind of reminds me of the kid in "A Christmas Story".

You are lucky that you got to see the presidential stuff. They wouldnt let us in and said it was for "appointment" only.

Alright! A little buddy to share your hobby with. My daughters both think my collection is cool, but that's the extent of their interest. My wife's eyes glaze over when I mention planes, and her exaspiration shows when I get a parcel in the mail. So no shared love of this hobby at the Gospodin residence..
