I bumped into this article and I thought I'd post it here:
Picture: Russian Sukhoi T-50 fighter images emerge-24/04/2007-Moscow-Flightglobal.com My question is: why is it designated as a "T" instead of "Su", as Sukhoi has done so in the past?

It's probebly just a prototype project name I suppose. Like the S-37 was (which is now the Su-47.)

Congrats, you get the award for being obvious. First off, its still in the design phase. This is when a bunch of Engineers fight on what goes into the plane and what dosn't to make it work right.

"T" is commonly used by Sukhoi to designate its projects or prototypes, like the famous T-4.

Sukhoi designates delta winged projects T, for example the Su-27 was the T-10, the original delta winged Su-24 prototype was the T-6 etc, whilst swept winged projects are designated with an S, for example S-37.
So T-50 already gives us some clue as to the aircrafts eventual appearance. |
