Don't know if any of you gents caught the story on CNN today, but the mysterious "Bird of Prey" aircraft was finally declassified and publicly revealed yesterday at the Phantom Works in St. Louis. Check out more at this link where I have some pictures of this unusual aircraft: http://www.diecastairlines.com/dcfor...mID15/128.html

I love the CNN reporter's comment, "The Air Force retired this aircraft, which is why we are seeing it now..."

Spectre,
The aircraft is real. I was at the roll out in STL. The aircraft was used for stealth technology and it was used for a flight demonstrator and was designed and built in the mid 90's. A lot of the lessons learned from the Bird of Prey aircraft was used for the UCAV X-45 aircraft Boeing is developing for the Air Force. The aircraft is amazing looking seeing it in person. Very futuristic and very high tech looking. The interesting thing not mentioned in any news article is that the aircraft was built under McDonnell Douglas. The Bird of Prey flew in 1996 for the first time and Boeing did not buy McDonnell Douglas till 1997. The aircraft flew 38 missions and has completed it's objectives, it will be probably now be sent to a museum or storage. |

Hopefully Boeing wins a new fighter contract one of these days. To (sort-of) quote Jan Brady - it"s always Lockheed, Lockheed, Lockheed. While Lockheed have come up with some fine and freaky machines, this one ought to get to see the light of day - especially since the YF-23 was shot down -

Now that is one interesting looking bird. I read somewhere it got the Bird of Prey nickname thanks to the resemblance of its wings to a Klingon Bird of Prey.

I think Boeing's fighter designers have a real struggle as Lockheed Martin now basically have all bases covered with both the F22 & F35, although the F18E/F may win a lot of export orders in addition to the USN/USMC orders for Boeing and have a long production run.
