What is everybody's favourite flying military flying boat? With the exception of Beriev and Shin Maywa the flying boat is dead (well I should add the Canadair Cl415 which is still offered) which is a great shame as the classic flying boats were some of the most elegant aircraft ever built. My own favourite is the Supermarine Southampton, a wonderful machine. How about everybody else?

In the category military aviation, I like the Catalina the best (sometimes called a Canso). Of all flying boats, I think the China Clipper Martin 130.

The Martin P6M Seamaster- the only US jet-powered flying boat and one mean-as* lookin' ride. Unlike most flying boats, the Seamaster has very sleek lines and must've been one helluva sight to behold as it "hit the step" just before takeoff. It's amazing that this was a flying boat that had performance to rival land-based aircraft.

I've always been partial to the PBY Catalina. next to my brothers in the submarine force the "Cat" rescued more people lost at sea during WW2 than any one else

The Martin Seamaster was an incredible machine, another impressive but often overlooked beast is the Beriev A40/Be42 Albatross, if Russia had enough money to develop this to it's full potential it could be a great aircraft. The UK actually considered the Albatross as a Nimrod replacement, but it was never serious, they were just trying to put pressure on BAe and Lockheed to make an attractive bid. The Catalina is one of aviation's genuinely great aircraft, and a favourite of mine. Another few of my favourites are the Shorts Sunderland, Supermarine Stranraer and looking wider than military the great civilian flying boats operated by the great inter war airlines were wonderful machines. In the 1920's and 1930's sea planes often had similar or even better performance to equivalent land based aircraft, for example the Southampton and Stranraer had performance as good as, and in some area's better than, contemporary RAF land based aircraft. Also, in the 1920's and 30's the Schneider trophy races probably did more to drive high speed development than any other single factor, even today the mighty S4, S5, S6 & S6B are magnificent looking aircraft. I always tend to discount Chinese designs as let's face it, not a lot a lot of design expertise is needed to steal Russian designs, ha!!

PBY Catalina is my all time favorite for its versatility, endurance, and sheer elegance.
Close seconds are Hughes Spruce Goose for sheer size formerly in Long Beach now up in the NW woods and the Short Sunderland which has a pretty neat mining mechanism I was able to inspect first hand near Cambridge. |

Kawanishi H8K 'Emily' - arguably, the best military flying boat of World War II.

The Latécoère 631 is just a great looking aircraft.
Edit: Oh, I see this old thread is about military boats, so I'd go for Convair R3Y and Blohm&Voss 222. |

The Martins Mariner/Marlin/Seamaster, plus the Albatross and PS/US-1s.
But the winner is the Convair R3Y1 Tradewind. Ace machine.

Actually, no-one seems to be mentioning the Convair Coronado, operated by NATS (under agreement with PanAm) post-war. A classic design, like the likewise undermentioned Dornier Do-24.

Not even a mention of the Sanders Roe SR45 Princess Flying Boat?
..and yes there were plans for a millitary version. " Well that is my first choice for favourite flying boat. Can we have W.I.G. craft? If so scrap the SR45(which they did),and i`ll have the KM Caspian Sea Monster first! ![]()
